One-of-a-Kind BMW i8 Concours d’Elegance Edition to be Auctioned During Pebble Beach

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
BMW has announced a special edition (one-of-a-kind) i8 to be auctioned off at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance weekend.

Particularly interesting to see that this car will be a combo of the Tera and PI worlds, and comes with the infamous Display Key. Also interesting to see, if you go to the auction site of Gooding and Co., that the expected price range is only $150K - $200K. I find it hard to believe it won't go for more than that.

Quote:
Woodcliff Lake, N.J. – July 25, 2014… In celebration of the US arrival of the BMW i8, the world’s most innovative sports car, a one-of-a-kind 2014 BMW i8 Concours d’Elegance Edition will be auctioned during the weekend of the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, ahead of the official fall sale date. The i8 Concours d’Elegance Edition will be distinguished by a unique paint scheme and interior treatment as well as other features that will make it unlike any other BMW i8 in the world. The BMW i8 Concours d’Elegance Edition will be sold by Gooding & Company, the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, during the annual Pebble Beach Auctions at Pebble Beach on Saturday, August 16. Proceeds of the sale will go to the Pebble Beach Company Foundation and the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

The 2014 BMW i8 Concours d’Elegance Edition will feature BMW Individual Frozen Grey Metallic exterior paint. The unique interior will boast Dalbergia Brown leather upholstery, which is tanned using dye derived from plant extracts. The upholstery is accented with stitching in BMW i Blue. The Pure Impulse Tera World interior includes other trim accents in BMW i Blue, including the seat belts, as well as having “BMW i8” embossed into the front headrests. A number of US firsts will be included with this special edition including laser headlights, pending government approval, a BMW i8 Display key as well as the first BMW Charging Station, professional edition.

The words “Concours d’Elegance Edition” i8 will be laser etched in the interior, further marking this as truly one-of-a-kind. The car will be sold at the Pebble Beach Auctions presented by Gooding & Company on Saturday, August 16 at the Pebble Beach Special Events area. For information about bidding or to watch a live stream of the auction, please visit www.goodingco.com.

The BMW i8 is arguably the most innovative sports car on the road today. The plug-in hybrid all-wheel drive powertrain combines an electric motor to drive the front wheels and a powerful and efficient 1.5-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder gasoline engine driving the rear wheels. The BMW i8 is capable of driving on pure electric power at speeds up to 75 mph for approximately 20 miles, producing zero tailpipe emissions. When the gasoline engine joins forces with the electric motor, together they are capacity of propelling the i8 for 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds and to a top speed of 155 miles per hour. Thanks in part to its passenger cell constructed out of lightweight carbon fiber reinforced plastic, The BMW i8 will deliver fuel efficiency normally associated with the stingiest subcompact. The lithium-ion battery pack that powers the electric motor can be charged from any 240-volt level 2 charging station as well as a conventional 110-volt outlet.

The BMW i8 is the world’s first series-produced vehicle to be made available with innovative laser headlights as an option. These generate a pure-white, extremely bright light that is pleasant to the eye by carefully converting the beams emitted by tiny laser diodes using a fluorescent phosphorous material inside the headlight. The laser diodes are ten times smaller than conventional light-emitting diodes, helping to save space in the headlight unit and also to reduce weight. The BMW i8 Concours d’Elegance Edition will be the first car in the US to have this technology, pending government approval. If necessary these headlights will be retrofit subsequent to delivery. It will also be the first BMW in the US to offer an innovative display key which features an integrated LCD touch screen.

The 2014 BMW i8 Concours d’Elegance Edition will not only offer the winning bidder the chance to own one of the first BMW i8s in the US, but also to own a truly one-of-a-kind example of the world’s most innovative sports car.

Yes the key is coming back , they have had second thoughts especially when queried by the first i8 customers on its existence.

"You have to do the key its the symbol that this is a vehicle of the future"

That is all. You sir have made my day.

Pure awesomeness right here.

Glad those first customers had the same feeling as I do!

The key makes this car 10x more special.

I guess the question becomes "will existing customers get it?" The tech is already in the car since the app does the same thing.

Ha! With the way the i8 launch has gone overall, I didn't want to spoil it by asking for, you know, actual details or specifics

I actually read about a i9 that could be coming out on bmw's 100 yr anniversary. BMW has the i9 name trade marked for a car they are working on. The front bumper looks exactly like the F8x M3/4.

All rumors so far. The interwebz have also talked about an M8, M1 successor, and M4 GTS, among other ideas, of what BMW will do to celebrate the big 100 jahre.

Regardless, this thread is about the i8, which is real, and the first one of which will be driving (and owned by a real actual customer) on US soil in less than 3 weeks....

I haven't seen an i8 "in the flesh," but I have seen an i3 and I sure hope the i8 isn't anywhere near as cheap feeling inside as is the i3. I was quite surprised at how "econo-box" the i3 felt inside.

All the best.

The i3 is in no way cheap inside.

I'm going to accept that that is either just a matter of differing opinions or that the one I saw differs from the one(s) you've experienced. Suffice to say, I wouldn't spend $40K+ for the vehicle my dealer had. When I sat in it, I felt it was very much like a typical rental car.

I'll concede that my words above might be somewhat overstating the matter for I'll agree that the cabin of many rental cars, while not plush, are certainly acceptable for what they are and for what it costs to buy one as a consumer. As for the i3, there was in the one I sat in a lot more hard plastic inside the cabin than I'd ever expect or pay for in a car having the price an i3 has. The seats were cloth too, and though I don't mind cloth seats, their presence (and the particular material/design that I experienced) didn't for me imbue the car's passenger cabin with the feeling of luxury, or even near-luxury.

All the best.

The i3 interior is what is called "New Premium"

The materials used in the interior are fully recycled and made from sustainable materials reflecting the Eco-philosophy of the BMWi image as well as individuality over a regular BMW interior.

I beg to differ. There are parts of the i3 interior that are "unfinished" recycled material. IMHO it looks like the equivalent of leaving particle board exposed on a piece of furniture. Yeah, I get the "let's show that we are using eco-friendly materials" idea. But I don't like the look. It looks like something is missing. To me it doesn't look "BMW".

The i8 has none of that. It looks fantastic (and fully finished) on the inside.

Dude blue seatbelts FTW!!!!

I have yet to hear one person say they don't like those blue seatbelts; unique seatbelts are that extra detail that is just too cool. Kind of like red seatbelts in a Porsche - if I ever get a Porsche, it will have red freaking seatbelts.

They look awesome as well as the blue contrast stitching and lighting package with blue (and red, configurable) interior ambience lighting. TRON status.

I also happen to like the exterior blue accents a lot, and feel that they go particularly nice with this one-off frozen grey paint scheme.

There are i8 configurations you can order without blue accents, and at least one of the interior packages that doesn't have interior blue accents. So there are choices.

You're certainly not alone, as I have read tons of comments of people who hate the blue accents since the car was introduced at Frankfurt last September. I can understand not liking the color scheme. I just don't understand why they are "gimmicky" - it's a paint scheme. Not like BMW put little fake robots on the roof to state how and advanced futuristic the car is. That would have been proper "gimmicky" !

it's gimmicky because it adds no functional value to the car and reminds me of a prius or nissan leaf that uses blue to yell to the world HYBRID! or ELECTRIC!

i see the BMW roundel surrounded by blue and it reminds me of the Toyota badge that's surrounded by blue on all of otheir hybrid cars

all the blue does it tout efficiency

and i think the fact that the only other cars that do this are 20,000/30,000 cars reflects poorly on BMW

now red seatbelts, that's cool.

We can agree to disagree on the definition of gimmicky, then. I mean, it's a paint/color scheme. When did a paint/color scheme ever add functionality to a car besides making it look a certain way?
(The announcement to the world part I agree with, it does do that; I can understand not liking that)

I get that the blue is there to tout efficiency, though I also (being a tech guy) see blue as a technology color; so to me, it fits very nicely with the i8 in particular.

Check out the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid. The Panamera lettering on the back of the hatch is green, as are the needles in the instrument cluster, with "E-Hybrid" lettering right in the center dial. Same concept, is it not?

[ Edit: Dude, even the Porsche 918 has green freaking brake calipers... being that it is the most efficient out of the 3 hybrid hypercars and all, guess it has to represent that status! ]

I use that example to illustrate that it's not just low-end cars that do this. I think manufacturers are proud of their new and constantly advancing electric/hybrid tech and they want to differentiate it somehow from the regular line-up to showcase it.
