M2 Pricing

So, after a little guessing, math, and logic, I convinced myself that the M2 will start for a base model right around 51k-52k.

I was curious if anyone here has any more solid leads on how it will be priced, and why/why not?

edit: WHY? The price difference between a base 4 and an M4 is 22k give or take, I'm going with 22k on top of the base 2 - more or less.

Bet you won't get out the door for less than 60 though.

I did mine based on a percentage difference between M3 and 328i and M4 and 428i and did same with 2 series, then I added a few bucks because i know BMW is raising prices annually and we are at least one price increase away, and in case my math seemed low I made a range.

I don't think you can just do it that way. Since the 2 series is a lower-end car, the M2 will likely not come with certain features like Navi standard or CF roof, or what not, so if you want to compare it equally, you should use percentage.

So if the M3 is 65% more expensive than 328i. Then the M2 could be 65% more expensive than a 228i, which comes out to 52,900-ish by my calculation.

I say it starts at 60,

Because you can get a loaded m235i for that much.

It's tough to spec a 335i into the base range of m3.

i'm going to go with 52k, because i just can't see them pricing it higher than a base cayman.

I love these kind of threads. It breeds more excitement for the product in question. I remember just before the E9X M3 came out we were speculating prices as well. My personal opinion is not using math and percentages but gut feelings.
Think about the E92 M3 when it came out was around $59,000. The M2 is going to be faster, lighter and a better car than the previous generation M3. I think above $60k is just too much, and as others have said the 2 series, being the cheapest model in the lineup, will prob not have all the standard features that the M4 has. We don't even know if it will have a CF roof or a CF drive shaft. We don't know the extent of weight savings they are going to do. Too much in the air right now. When we get more details I will make a more informed guess.

If it comes with CF roof which it should I'll say $58k base price

This will not be a watered down M car, it will be as good as the M3/4 but with a lower price tag...just low enough to make buyers say "its a no brainer (m2 vs m4)". Of course the pricier m4 will still be the better looking coupe imo

M2 will NOT repeat what the 1M was...a bargain M car

My guess was tongue-in-cheek. It's all just silly logic.

EDIT

That's probably the best logic thus far. At the end of the day price really is based on what people will pay, not what we think it's worth

If we get all of the M4's chassis and cf goodies I would expect 55k and then optioned out to 65-68k and if they offer CCB (which I think they should another 8k) If it comes with lesser chassis and cf stuffs I think we might have around a 50k base. The real question is how much chassis goodness are they going to put into this chassis. Ideally it would be a smaller M4, albeit with less power. It has to be 90% of the performance of the F8X and not cost too much less to not make $$$ or cannibalize sales. It also needs to not be prohibitively expensive at the base price to bring in a younger buyer. My numbers are honestly just pulled out my ass but I think they would be fitting.

In the UK the M4 is $25k more than the base 435i, the base M235i is $52k, so in the UK we are screwed lol, I'd say around $75k over here for a base M2

LOL

Down here I'm guessing it will be well equipped and be circa $130k on the road. (+$15 to $18k over the 1M pricing in 2011)

I'm expecting a similar price point to the 1M, with MRRP at $99k, so a touch under $120k driveaway.

I'm hoping Mercedes aggressive pricing of the 45 AMG models might also push MRRP down to about $95k. But then pigs would also fly.

Agree. Which is pretty much the same way the 1M tucked in under E9x.

Base price 10-11K less than the M4 coupe and max out just below the M3 sedan price.

The 1M wasn't a "bargain" M car... it was a no-nonsense, no frills quintessential driver's car... The fact that it was $48k, was because it offered nothing but the essentials, 6m, lsd & engine.

The M2 will be based on the M235i/M235i R and will start roughly at $52~54. CF roofs are MUCH cheaper to make now and will only add to the value of the car, not it's price.

Don't forget.. the M2 has to compete with other cars.. not just the M4, which is irrelevant at this point.

When I said Bargain I didnt mean cheap...hell my 2006 325 costed $48k (optioned) so for a M car $48k was a bargain.

Its going to be close...$52k, $58k all depends what standard options it will have

+ 1 the price of the competition will dictate the M2 price, customer loyalty will only go so far if it is not built to limited supply.

350, I have a M235 ordered which is high spec, RRP $115 drive away, discounted to $99 drive away. On that basis retail for a M2 won't be $120, I reckon close to $130. M3/4 prices have risen which also gives credibility to this higher price point IMO.
