MPG Enhancement day!
As you all are probably aware,Carlos,Evil Diesel and myself were all due for a engine modification today.
The purpose of the modification was to improve the drivability and fuel economy of the car,the added and surprising (for me anyway!) effect of the above modification, is an increase in BHP and Torque, which given the very reasonable price was a welcome bonus. Firstly, many thanks to Simon for travelling down to Essex, and his patience and perserverance, given the problems initially experienced with Tony's 335D. Secondly, thanks to Carlos for hosting the event, and many thanks to his lovely girlfriend for keeping the cold at bay with endless cups of tea and coffee. It was freezing today, every and I mean every extremity was numb! Many commiserations to Carlos,as James' post explains,Carlos' car had a hissy fit, preventing Simon from carrying out the mod. It's a shame, as Carlos will have to wait to experience the gains in fuel economy, and of course secondary to the latter, the extra performance. I would wax lyrical to the effects of the modification, but apart from some brief moments of spirited motoring, most of the journey home - M11 - M25, was stuck doing anywere between 10 - 55 MPH. Anyway onto the spirited motoring, the first thing you notice is the added oomph under your right foot,it's a indescribable feeling and needs to be experienced, the car is quicker on launch, but not as jaw droppingly awesome as James' 335i. The roads were particularly greasy today, and my car is twitchy at the best of times,so putting the traction down was harder today. The car span it's back wheels and veered to the side on change up from 2nd to third, on change up to 4th the wheels span again, and by that point I had to slow down, otherwise Carlos' car would have had tyre marks on his boot, roof and bonnet! The real power comes in on the motorway (I did get a chance on the Surrey side of the Dartford crossing),in auto mode at any speed, the power pickup is truely stunning and just keeps going and going. Hit the pedal at 70 and your in ban territory in the blink of an eye! For me personally, thats where it's at on the diesel's,OK the 0-60 time will no doubt be improved, but on a straight road,I don't think there's many cars that could match the brute force of the added torque. So that's the performance side,so what about the real reasons for the modification, yes the car is smoother, change up is hardly noticable and the power is delivered effortlessly,MPG, well as the journey home was mainly at lower speeds,it's hard to say,but I'm sure the added efficiency will enhance what is already a frugal car. Top marks to Simon, great job, professionally done, and a really nice geezer (He was in Essex today!) P.S.Alaistair Campbell already has my CV Oh I did take some pics, unfortunately the light was going, and I'm no David Bailey,so of the 4 I took, this one is the best of a bad batch: |

Hi Ian, glad you had a safe drive home, did you try calling earlier?
Is the car much much quicker? I was flat out when landrover moved out the way and you were all over my bumper, considering stock i had 10bhp more than you, you must be packing some ponies now!! Glad the Tea was good, i think My Miswah makes a mean cuppa too I hope to visit BMW this week to find out what the fault code is on mine Carlos

Good to see you today.
Simon is a good lad although I can't understand why a freezer was requuired on a day like today! Walnut whipps all round I would have thought. I also had a few moments of enjoyable 'fuel efficiencies' too on the way home. I do like to see the little christmas tree light blinking away in front of me all the way up to 90 - presumably this is indicating that I am saving lots of money on diesel right? |

Great pics thanks for sharing.
I bet the Miswah's neighbours wondered what was going on with new BMWs being serviced in the road.

Your miswah was a lifesaver, very sweet with it too. Don't beat yourself up about the fault code,it could have happened to anyone, but only you No seriously,I'm sure it's nothing serious, and will be easily rectified.I will keep you posted on the fuel savings, which will futher convince you of the modification's worth Quote:
I was surprised by the freezer,it was soooo cold anyway,Simon could have put it down my trousers,it would have had the same affect as the freezer, there was nothing in my pants to obstruct the ECU,that had disappeared up into my groin! Of course the Xmas tree is indicating a fuel saving, that's what the day's exercise was all about, right! |
