Review compilation: The big, bad 335is coupe/convertible DCT vs. M3 sedan 6MT thread

I drove a 6MT M3 today and man the car is amazing. Going from a FBO 335is DCT to this car you can really feel the difference in stepping up the game to an M

I drove the car in a downtown area so i didnt really get it out of 3rd/4th but I was able to get on the throttle in 1st and 2nd and the exhaust really opens up nicely from being almost too quiet at idle. I had all the settings on Sports + and going over some railroad tracks and less than ideal road surface the car felt firm and the suspension wasn't as stiff as some people like to call it.

One thing driving the 6MT confirmed was that the car needs a DCT. I've owned an 08 335i MT and all my previous cars have been MT. But it just didn't feel right in the M. Call me blasphemous but the pedal was too high in the car, in my comfortable seating position my knees were uncomfortably high resting on the clutch pedal and while the engagement was good the throws are not short in a sporty way as some have stated. Drive an s2000 and u'll know what a buttery smooth transmission should be like with a nice short throw shifter. The car also felt too big and clunky with a 6MT.

Other than that the car's look/stance blew me away. From the outside (SO color) the car is a lot smaller than one would think thanks to the wide rear end, it almost made me consider asking the dealer how much it would cost to take this one off the lot on looks alone.

Can't wait for my M4 to arrive.

TurboSid,

Next drive try playing with the seat. It has a great range of adjustment and you may be able to get into a better position for working the clutch, brake and throttle.

Cheers.

Ok, blasphemous. Some of us do not prefer buttery smooth shifts. I, for one, love notchy throws on my gearbox. It's a connected to the road thing for me. YMMV

Test drove the m3 today !!! MT need to go DCT

So test drove the M3 MT, I do have to say the first thing in my mind was how nice is this car inside and out, BMW and the M division did the right touches on the new f80.

The bad:

* to adjust the steering it is manual, it's not electric (I was confuse/shock)
* when you put the car the car on reverse the park assist system doesn't come on neither does the camera, you actually have to to press the parktronic button... I was shock and confuse again
* this seats don't have anymore the adjustment at the bottom is all set on one position.... I actually love that feature on the e90
The steering wheel didnt feel as thick as the m sport on the e90, i may be wrong on this one but it just felt that way.
* the clutch pedal felt so long and there is no way again no way i will get this car without the DCT... If you are a die hard mt guy then get it but its not impressive or comfortable at all... Again imo guys !!
* the right side mirror didnt adjust automatically down for a better view when the car was on reverse. ( may be the salesman didnt know how to set the car to do so ) and yes i did push the mirror adjustment bottom to the left mirror and nothing...

The good:

* Lots of power and plenty of torque (as usual bmw is underrating this car on the numbers)
* the suspension is amazing !!
* the braking system was a bit too touchy for my taste but when you need stopping power is there 100% very impressive. If you are dd the regular braking system felt more than enough for the car, so cc brakes will be a plus but not a must have unless you track your car. again imo guys !! (but they look awesome)
* let me make this clear there is NO video or clip that can justify how nice the exhaust note was and inside the cabin the sound is pure sex !!
* the electronic steering was awesome and it felt very non electronic, i was very concern about this but after a couple of hard corners and hard braking it felt GREAT !!! Well done M division

Don't have these issues with my car. The camera and mirror worked fine for me on my ED trip.

I just drove a 6mt M4 today and it confirmed that I didn't need to drive the DCT M3 they had there! lol manual all the way with this car; especially for me since it'll be my daily driver... that's right.

You have to set the mirror switch towards driver side or else mirror doesn't tilt down when reversing.
(Edit: Nevermind just read you did that)

  • M3's have never had an electronically adjustable steering column
  • The car should go automatically in RVC/PDC mode when in reverse (...just like the F3X)
  • Yes, we know. With the bucket seats comes no adjustable thigh support
  • The steering wheel is slightly less thick (..this was a purposeful decision made by BMW, and many auto journalists favor the thickness of the new wheel)
  • Get longer/stronger legs!
  • I haven't tried the right side mirror adjustment on the new car, but I know BMW did away with the tilt feature ever since the 2011.5 E9X BMW M3 (..unless you had the Premium Pkg I believe), so this is not new to the F8X (..presuming your car wasn't faulty/lacking some sort of coding). It should work fine on the new car just as it does on the F3X.

OP, can you post your pic here? I'll use in the future as the smiley when I fuck up monumentally with the grammar?

Then to the post.

I think I got most of your points, but "* the right side mirror didnt adjust automatically down for a better view when the car was on reverse. ( may be the salesman didnt know how to set the car to do so ) and yes i did push the mirror adjustment bottom to the left mirror and nothing..."

I know nothing more annoying than getting used to an angle and then some bloody computer changes it, when I really need to know what I am seeing. Okay, you can get used to this too, but I'm like the rest of the manual crew, stubborn as hell.

Thank you for the review.

before someone trashes this, let me add my unusual disclaimer of not drinking coffee this week.

Apparently there's some strange anomaly with BMWs configured for sale in Florida too. They only sold the 335is with DCT there, but now with the new M3 they will only be carrying 6MT? Unfortunate situation.

Drove one today. The car corners so flat, it's amazing. The entire car feels lighter and more lightly sprung than the E9x. It seems more eager with respect to driver inputs. But the sound is just weird. It was hot as hell so we had the windows up and sound drones out conversation. But the weird part is the sound is entirely inside. When you open the windows the sound is not outside. Going to take some getting used to. I loved the car though. It's got me thinking.

How can you even properly review the manual tranny when you don't even know if it was 3rd or 4th gear that you didn't get above?
Was your salesman in the car with you when you drove the car?Couldn't he have taken you on a street where you could have had some space to get it to sixth gear?It really doesn't take much time to get the manual up to sixth, especially with the amount of torque in this car.

I think driving a manual is to get use everything the car has to offer, and mastered it. That's how you play with the soul, the M soul to be exact, of the car. And it's FUN!
