Track tires? Have anyone taken M4/M3 to the tracks yet?
I'm trying to decide which track tires and sizes to get for my next track day. I might just use the oem 19" PSS. There are nothing much on 255/275.
I'm considering R888 265/30/19 & 295/30/19 or down 245/265 like E92 M3 or RE11 255/35/19 & 285/35/19 or AD08R 255/275. Anyone research on tires yet? |

Considering there's only one guy who has openly tracked his car - and on stock wheels - you might not receive much feedback.

The new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 is available in 265/35-19 and 275/35-19 sizes. It's provided incredible data on the new GT3 and is supposed to be a fantastic tire. Expensive of course.

I plan on using the same track wheel and tire setup I was using on my E9X. I run square 275/35R18 NT01 tires on 18"x10" Enkei NT03+ wheels. I prefer using a square setup at the track because you can rotate the tires front to rear to balance wear. The square setup also removed a fair bit of unwanted understeer on the E9X and made the car nicely balanced. My experience with the PSS is that cannot really take the heat on a dry track. After a few laps, they overheat and just melt and chunk away. It probably depends on your experience level, they are OK at beginner/intermediate speeds, but when you start putting heat into them with higher slip angles, they don't last. They are great wet track tires though. |

One thing i would recommend to all about choosing tires is pay particular attention to stock diameters and the difference between front and rear. The latest ESP, TC and ABS electronics are calibrated according to the relative RPM difference between front/rear. It appears that for F8x a difference of 0.8-1.1" difference is what works.

There are only PC2 in 235, 265, 275 & 305 on 19" from TR. Since people already use the PSS on the tracks maybe I'll play with those for the first two days. My M is still stock on steel brakes and M suspension since JRZ won't have parts ready yet and alignment is set at max stock negative only.
Still want to look for best tires as more 19" are available. Nothing on the R6 list neither. |

New F80 owner here - picked up my car Friday night and went to VIR Saturday morning with the local bmwcca chapter and thought I'd add my .02.
Since this is a tire discussion, I'll say I thought the stock PSS tires were fine at the track. Granted, I wasn't pushing super hard as 1) I'm coming from a 2000 lb car to 3400 with double the HP and maybe 3x torque and 2) there is thing called a "break-in" period that I was trying to adhere to but by Sunday afternoon I was comfortable with the power and weight and got a good feel for the tires' capability. For reference, I have the 19" wheels. I was a little worried at first with the 300 UTQG rating of the PSS tires (my former Lotus OEM street tires were 60!!!), but they performed perfectly for driving to the track, doing their duty, then driving home. I didn't gather from the OP if these were to be track-only tires or dual-duty. You can certainly find stickier track-only tires, it just depends on your budget, if you trailer vs drive to the track, carry wheels/tires in the car with you, etc. I've heard good things about the RE11 so I may try those once these wear out but for the time being I see no reason to replace the PSS just for the track. Good luck and have fun!

If you're talking about the PSC2, it's because Michelin doesn't make it in a 255/35-19.
I would guess that the 265/35-19 will fit and work fine. It's unlikely anyone has actually test fitted it yet.

for CUPS 265/35/19 all around? Then next is 305/30/19 for rear? No good sizes yet.

If front wheel is 9.5" a 265 should work fine up front if its a 9.0" youll muffin top too much, you could also go 285 out back on 10" wheel no problem. I second the re-11s they have been impressive in both dry and wet track use.., I run 275 square on my e92

For the new PSC2, I'd personally run 265/35-19 front and 275/35-19 rear if using stock F80 wheels. If not, then running a square setup using 18" wheels likely makes the most sense and running a track specific R-comp like the BFG R1, 275/35-18 all around...
Note that the 275/35-19 PSC2 is an "MO", Mercedes spec tire, with the only other MO spec PSC2 being a 325/30-20, so it's likely this tire was optimized for front fitment. Both the 265/35-19 and the coming 285/35-19 PSC2 are "normal" PSC2 tires, not developed for a specific application, so both of these are likely a better choice to use. TireRack could comment on this further perhaps. Here's a view from the French Michelin site showing all the sizes so far: http://www.michelin.fr/pneus/micheli...tyres-benefits Click on Dimensions Pneumatiques Et Grades D'Etiquetage to see the sizes/specs.

I'm also concern of the 265 on 9" oem wheel. I'm considering the RE11 255/35R19 with 285/35R19 rear. With only 0.3" taller rear. Coming from Porsche backgrounds, I don't know Yokohama very much??
I know some customs track wheel would help to find the tires but that's after the JRZ. |
