M3/M4 Navigation/Computer Software Updates

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knew if BMW planned on taking the Tesla route and allowing for either over-the-air or factory software upgrades to the navigation/infotainment system? Would be quite bad ass....

That would require a way to hook up to hone wifi or onboard cellular. Is that possible with current F series BMW

You can make the car a hotspot.

I haven't noticed any hotspot settings, but I haven't complete dug through every submenu yet. The car does have a software update option in the settings menu that I imagine just looks at the USB input for the data. I have a BMW supplied Euro maps thumb drive inserted there now and it instantly and flawlessly converted over to the european maps and navi once I inserted it.

This is a codeable option ... most useful for DLNA streaming to the headunit display (music, videos, etc.)

Right now the F-Series BMWs all have a 3G connection via AT&T in the USA for Connected Drive ... presumably BMW could use this, but I assume they would not want that much data over 3G.

Right now ... updates via OBD-II or USB only

I may look into that once I get my car.

Hmm.. since updates aren't done OTA, is this normally something we as the owners are responsible for, or do the dealers do it?

I've gone to www.bmw.com/update and downloaded the latest update for my VIN, and it appears to have updates for media and telephone which are older than what is currently on my car.

Currently my car has:
Media: MN-002.045.001
Telephone: TN-002.045.001

What is offered on the website:
UPD05021.bin
TN-2.34.1
MN-2.18.2

Are GPS updates included here as well usually? Anyone have experience with how often BMW usually released updates this way?

wouldnt those be newer considering TN-2.34.1 is a greater number than TN-2.045.001

thats what I thought as we'll at first glance, but it looks like in their numbering scheme they drop the leading 0s. This also becomes more apparent when you download the release notes and none of the release versions have preceding 0s .
