Not sure if I'm doing the right thing - from M5 to M3

Going from a brand new 2014 CP M5 into an M3 this week. Car should be here any day.

I don't know how I'm going to live without the goodies of the M5, the ventilated seats, bigger iDrive screen, automatically closing trunk. But the M5 is just so big and disconnected. It's such a beast and great car, but it's just a comfortable highway cruiser. I mean my heart and brain definitely know how much better the M3 is for me. I'm only 30 years old. But on the other hand, once I drank the M5 medicine, it's addictive. Now every friking day on the M3, I will compare it against the M5 and this and that.

What do you guys think?

Oh and I actually never test drove the car before, but looking at the HP figures, their weight ratios are fairly similar, so on paper it should push me back to my seat as much as the M5 does correct? Or will it be less aggressive?

But the M5 puts such great lap times, like some of those lap times the magazines published, it is literally less than a second behind the M3. I don't know how that's even possible with a 2 ton car. That's what worries me that M3 won't feel as fast. It can probably pull those lap times because the engine is massive.

Please make this an easy week for me, be supportive. I don't know what the f*** I'm doing.

How could you even consider giving up the automatically closing trunk? Get your mind right, boy!

I too am in my early 30s and had convinced myself that the M5 with it's larger size, practicality, and massive power was the ticket. I was lured to the dealership to test drive after reading the particulars on lease rates. The dealer allowed me to drive their Sakhir/Sakhir/Comp. Package car with less than 5 miles on it. I knew in about 30 seconds of a 45 minute long drive that this car was not for me. Too big, the sound it makes is just not good, and the power just doesn't feel like I thought it would.

I don't have enough background info. on you to help you make a decision, but for me it was very clear I would have hated the M5.

Do you intend to track the M3? If not, then I see no reason to get rid of the M5 if you like the comfort and luxury it provides.

Despite the very good published lap times of the M5, I would be concerned with the cost of consumables of a 4000+lb car.

I may or may not track the M3. I don't know.

The problem with the M5 in my mind is that it just does not feel like a sports car. At that size level, I may as well get a 550. It's as big as the previous 7 series and looks too big from outside.

The exhaust on the M5 sounds better too, but that's fixable in the M3 with an akra exhaust.

I am not making a decision by the way, I already made it. I just don't want to have buyer's remorse and need some guidance here

Follow your immediate/first thought. Follow your gut! That's the car you should buy. Don't over-analyze it.

realistically you should keep the m5 until you test drive an m3. then you would know for sure

personally, there is no chance id pick an m5 over an m3 for a myriad of reasons

-too big
-too fat
-don't like the styling
-looks just like a 550
-no widebody
-too expensive for what it is etc...

There are certain things the M5 will give you that the M3 will not and vice versa. Your happiness with the car will determine on whether you focus on those things that the M3 has, mainly agility, as opposed to the luxurious creature comforts of the M5.

M3 is also not really that small a car, it is smaller than the M5 yes but not a small sports car.

M5's biggest problem for me is its too quiet and disconnected. To enjoy the car, I have to drive it at insanely high and illegal speeds. It has so much power on low end, by the time you get the engine in a sweet spot for the sound to kick in, you are at triple digits.

The engine is way too quiet until 4000 rpm.

Also overall its just too long and rear gives in when taking turns etc, just too big.

But it has such gorgeous interior, the lcd screen is enough really and its just small things here and there like the electronic steering position or how the car automatically adjusts the seats depending on which driver gets in the car or the night lights on the buttons or doors.

But at the same time its too expensive to drive. Every fucking thing about car screams money. Huge wheels, tires, maintenance, insurance, gas. Like when you add those up and the difference its another car payment.

The M4 is only like 0.4in smaller in width from what I read earlier.
