How hard / costly will it be to take an F90 to 200K miles and beyond?

I’m curious what everyone’s plans are. For me, this is a keeper.

How hard / likely / costly will it be to take it to 200K?

What are the highest mileage F90 at today, and what’s ownership been like?

Sure, there will be better cars in the future, but 13K in, I can’t recall a car I’ve loved more.

One car was for sale a few months ago with about 135k miles and the seller said a lot had been spent on maintenance and repairs, but I don’t recall a specific amount. He listed the car at $35k, I think. If I did not already have an F90, I would have thought seriously about buying it.

Have not read about a 200k car yet but there probably are a few. My car is a 2018 with only 45k and just maintenance and no repairs. Lots like it. But 90k or 180k may be very different. I usually do a lot of preventative maintenance. Changing the transmission fluid, for example, is not on BMW’s list at any mileage even though ZF, which makes the trans, recommends periodic fluid changes.

I want to get to 10 years/150k miles at least. Looking at the F10 forum there aren't a ton of cars there with high miles to but at least there don't seem to be a lot of age related problems. I subscribe to the theory that BMWs die more from age than miles. My only practical experience is with my wife's 07 E90 that we had for 150k. Aside from it leaking like a British car it did pretty well (after all the N54 1st model year warranty issues were worked out). Of course it also did 16k miles on each oil change which I wonder if that contributed to oil leaks.

I hope I will still love the M5 in 2033. Some cars seem dated after a while but I don't think that will be the case here. My 09 CTS-V didn't feel dated inside. But it was annoying to have to have my phone mounted on the windshield to have a useful map/traffic/audio player. Android auto may be around forever but will a phone in 2033 still connect to iDrive 7? Who knows.

Or maybe the next gen M5 will be so awesome I'll want it. Or cars will drive themselves and I'll just ride around in the backseat of an i7 or whatever and not care about cars anymore.

Had a thoughtful response to this that I accidentally deleted by force closing the app before posting, so l will just summarize here.

I agree with your sentiments. I’ve now spent nearly 40k miles combined behind the wheel of two F90s as my DD and they’ve been glorious.

I am lucky if ever finish out the time and mileage allotment for my DDs, which I always lease, even though I own my other cars. I like something fresh every 2 1/2 years or so. My desire for a new car every few years is at odds with my adoration for this car. I’ve contemplated keeping it, even though I’ve never bought out a lease, because I love it that much. So then I thought I might just keep the F90, and get into another fresh DD in ‘25. But I genuinely cant come up with anything else I’d want to replace it with.

I’ve said on here before that the F90 is the ultimate DD I’ve ever had. Even if I allotted significantly more to my DD budget, I honestly don’t know what I would replace the car with. I can’t come up with something better for me, even if I decided to toss another $50K worth of car in. I think that says a lot in and of itself.

Hopefully the G90 will be so good, I’ll have no problem relinquishing my current car, but I’m skeptical. I love my ICEs and I’m resistant to go hybrid or (eventually) EV, especially for an M car.

As for reliability, we’ve seen 100k mileage examples that are pretty reliable. Getting to 200k might be another matter though, if not for mileage, for the time that usually comes with it (for most) as mentioned above. These are extremely highly engineered cars, and as a result, significant things will likely need replacing and repair if driven like the car was meant to be. BMW engineers these cars to be able to be sold twice or so on average within the first 5 years of its life. Often as a lease, and then again on lease return. Even further, we frequently see them change hands a third time after that. That is likely the amount of time that they are meant to really run without more significant issues.

Just my $0.02.

I agree with all of the previous comments, I can't see me changing my F90 for a different car. I love my car and I plan to keep it for a long time. I usually buy cars and not lease, but I hold on to cars for 5 -6 years. I will definitely be putting several thousand aside to cover any repairs for once the extended warranty has expired.

I asked at the performance center and they told me ignore the "lifetime" BMW states and change every 50k miles. Rear differential every 7500 if driven hard.

As someone that runs a European Specialist repair facility I can tell you, as with most late model BMW's, 200k is unlikely.

Cost per mile grows with age as more and more items come of age and failures become more frequent. Most owners are not positioned to put that much money into the car to get that kind of miles out of them.

The only exception I have seen to this is individuals that put 25-25k a year on the cars, and manage to drive massive miles on in an extremely short period of time. Assuming basic maintenance and repairs are kept up with its possible there...

ZF recommends a transmission service every 60,000 miles or 8 years, whichever occurs first. ZF also recommends halving that interval any time the input torque rating is exceeded considerably.

This is me. I normally drive 20-25k miles / year. I have the 5 year 100k mile extended warranty and plan on getting my money's worth. Not sure I'll make it to 200k though. I sold both previous cars just shy of 100k and 4 then 6 years of and didn't really have any serious issues. My biggest complaint was with the 6 year old car, the iPhone was having problems connecting and working properly. I have a feeling that that will be the same issue 5+ years from now.

I bought my son a 2018 Toyota Avalon a few months ago, it had 127,000 miles and is in mint condition. That car will go to 200k, and we will likely just spend money on tires, gasoline and oil changes.

A BMW is not a Toyota.

If you want your M5 to go for 200k miles, it's not so much about the total cost. Just some monthly budget.

My total outlay for my '03 RS6 worked out to be about $952 a month over 14.5 years that I drove it up to 146,000 miles. Including lease, buy out, extended warrantee, tires, oil, repairs (not including gasoline and insurance). I made a bad decision at its near end of life for an engine pull to fix an oil leak. That cost me $15,000. Dumb. But I enjoyed that car so much more than my current M5. Ya the M5 is faster, yada yada yada, but the RS6 was so much more fun to drive. Just felt so much more planted and sounded so much better LOL.

If you are doing say 15k miles a year you are looking at 14 years of driving. So figure on $1200 to $1400 a month to buy it, and keep it going. ? $200k over 15 years? Perhaps more....you'd be nuts to keep it after the warrantee runs out.....or at least when it dies, don't resuscitate it. That's my plan. I'll have a few months left of payments when my extended warranty is up, so it will be drive by the seat of my pants until it shits the bed.

Lol at the DNR comment. You bring up some good points. My car will be a full code if it croaks. Break some ribs!

Unlike grandma's estranged family and Medicare, if you ask them to resuscitate you have PAY for the service.

My plan was to keep it until the MY25 or 26 came out, then trade in. Lately I just don’t know how I would let go of the car though. I just love it so much, and I love it more every time I get in it. Mine is an ‘18 and I usually only keep my cars 4-5 years, but at only 20k miles it will last me for a long time yet.

So I’m undecided, but will decide when I see the next model or my warranty runs out in a year or two.

My friends MY19 already done 108k with no issues… he just replaced a coolant reservoir once at 35k miles and doing regular servicing, oil change every ~7-8k miles, diff fluid every ~15-20k and transmission oil every ~25-30k… that’s what I’ve been told, hope it helps

Edit: it has a stage 2 tune with catless downpipes, eventuri intakes/inlets

14 years ago a Mustang had 300HP now you can get a Toyota Camry with 300. 14 years from now 600 could look like nothing compared to electric offering’s. I agree though, the thought of a 16 yo driving this car to school would scare me.

Thank you for this tread!! I started one a while back asking people to post their mileage (looking for highest) since the F90 has been out 5+ years .. thread did not really get any traction.

I'm on my second F90. Currently a 21' Comp. Turned 42k miles this week.

I would LOVE to get 150k out of the car with reasonable costs.

Ha! new to the forum and new M5 owner here, just loved your comment. I had a Mustang Cobra in the early 2000’s with about 400hp, I thought it was a rocket. This car would walk it lol

The thought of one day handing it to my 3 year old does make me laugh though!
