Who changes their own oil before the service is due?

I'm one of those people, I still have the free maintenance but was curious what you're all doing?

I assume it's the s63 engine and 10 liters of 0-30w?

I used 10L last change. The upside down filter housing on 18-20 and maybe 21 models is messy. Look into changing to the new cap that has a drain plug and swap it when you do the oil change

depends on how much i drive. I have no doubt the oil will last a year if the miles are low. But i generally dont let it go over 6k without a change. unless i have a factory change around the corner then i'll try and schedule it a little early. i also put 0w-40 in when i change especially during the summer months. i prefer a thicker oil in the warmer months especially how hot our engines get.

on my X5 i change every 5k or 6 months since thats the main vehicle for the family.

I bought the Weistec oil filter housing with the drain plug. Makes the change less messy, but I’m sure the new housing from BMW is less expensive (never thought I say it’s less $$ from BMW!) and just as functional. I was surprised with one aspect of the drain plug though. I’d thought once I’d let the oil stop flowing from the opened plug all the oil would be drained from the housing….wrong! When I began unscrewing the filter housing more oil was released from the drain plug hole. Luckily I’d left the drain pan underneath, but after letting the extra oil drain, each turn of the housing released more oil. I’ll guess it’s the way BMW has configured the pressure relief spring which allows the oil to drain as the housing is unscrewed.

So, while the drain plug does help a lot with reducing the mess, be careful even with the improved housing.

I have the Weistec also. I drain the pan first and once the drain stream is small, I open the filter housing drain. My drain pan is big enough to cover both holes if the drain streams are small. The Weistec or new BMW design housing definitely helps reduce the mess. I have virtually no cleanup compared to before. The spring loaded assembly that goes in the bottom of the filter cap is detaching from the cap and staying in the filter so I pull it out and pop it back into place in the cap. I may order a new one if it is available separately. It never popped out of the stock cap when removing the filter, at least until I purposely popped it out to transfer it over to the Weistec.

I imagine any drain pan with the 10L capacity will cover both the pan and the filter. I think the plastic tabs of the stock filter housing grab the pressure relief fitting more securely than the aluminum of the Weistec. But why would you buy another?

I have a lift so my drain is a rolling 4 gallon container with an adjustable stem and round drain basin at the top. It’s not that big. I do have a larger pan I can put on top to extend it if I am dropping a transmission pan but don’t use that for oil changes.

I’d buy another cap insert because it might stay in place. Could have loosened the original up when removing it from the factory cap. And it may have loosened up with age and heat - 4 years and 40k miles. Or it may be that a new one won’t stay in place in the Weistec cap either.

I just have a measly drain pan from NAPA, but it's the only one I found that handles that much oil at once.

Perhaps buying the new BMW version of filter housing would work for you? The plastic would hold the fitting in place. I don't understand why that bothers you though.

I was almost 45 before I got my first lift, a Greg Smith BP8000 two post that cost about $1200. Well worth the money. I installed it myself. Prior to that, I spent a lot of time on my back. As you age, getting under and out from under the car is a slower process. I still use jacks and jackstands if a car is disabled on the lift and I have to get another project done.

Quick jacks and a nice creeper would be a good option if you have very low ceilings or cannot install anything permanent.

That's exactly what I ended up doing about 2 years back for the M and our X

I change at 7000 miles max, or less if condition based service calls for it, using genuine BMW 0W-30. Do it myself and costs about $120 bucks for oil and mahle filter with supplied crush washer and oil filter housing gaskets.

I have the quick jacks and love them for efficiency. Make sure you get the 6000 ELX model, because all other models of theirs won't reach the jack points, which are crazy far apart for a vehicle of its size. Even the smaller models with the extensions won't work on the M5.

I bought my 2020 used last year with 11K miles. The maintenance plan only covers the original owner. Ended up purchasing 4yr maintenance from a vendor here. I've now got almost 30K miles on the car and loving every minute of ownership.

Literally any dealer can sell you a service plan or extended warranty. It’s a commodity they mark up to make money so not every dealer will charge the same $$ for the same level package.
Shop around. Different states….
