Wifi in cars
I came across this post..
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/wireless/...ars-225384.php and it made me wonder, if google maps can send navigation instructions via internet to a BMW, can't bmw tie up with a service provider to enable wifi in their cars, so you can send emails and stuff using i-drive technology and may be a blue-tooth keyboard? You dont have to do this while driving, but wouldn't it be great if it works when the car is parked? Are there any alternatives for this except using ur cell phone and ur laptop ofcourse..

hm interesting. i wonder how much money it is costing Avis to make all those hot spots. i bet it's pretty sparse... i'm not sure how much money Avis has, though.
Here in Houston, we're looking at citiwide wifi in a year or two anyways... http://blogs.chron.com/techblog/arch...posts_rfp.html

seems like bmw is already in the game..
http://bimmeromania.blogspot.com/200...wi-fi20gb.html well.. avis is charging $11/day per car.. so.. even though it's cheap for the customer, it's a lot of money for avis provding the number pf cars they rent near airport car rentals and stuff.

Avis is using Autonet Mobile's kits.
Regarding Wi-Fi in a BMW, some of the people I talk to regularly in research areas of BMW are working on this. In fact, I wrote about a little of this in an article in the Roundel that appeared late last year entitled ,,Geekfreude am Fahren II``.

If you want wi-fi in your car, go buy a sprint data card and several routers are made that you can directly plug in the data card and have an instant wi-fi anywhere you have cell phone signal.

It would be cool if the nav system came with the ability to utilize a cell phone with high speed data via bluetooth as a modem - it's really not a stretch. Surfing pr0n while you're driving? Not a good idea. Having the nav system integrated with Google's maps would be pretty excellent though. Not to mention streaming music, etc. I want this bad because I have a Squeezebox (http://www.slimdevices.com) and can already stream my entire music collection over the internet.

My favorite feature in the squeezebox is that it is a great Internet radio receiver for a traditional stereo system - but traditional systems aren´t browser controlled.

Forgot to mention, sometimes I leave a Palm 750 connected to the aux-in to support Internet radio in the car.
