What was your root cause? The spacers themselves?

At this point he removed all spacers and lugs and went back to the OEM lugs. The Dinan front lugs keep loosening. Even after he tightened them and went on a few mile test drive he came back and found them loose again. He believes the detailer over torqued them and stretched them. But at the same time, he does not like the way the front spacers are sitting. So he told me to drive it for a few weeks to make sure the issue is gone and then he will go to Dinan and plead his case for new lugs and new front spacers.

It's just an off situation. Everything was fine until the detailer removed the wheels. Even though he thinks the lugs are stretched from the detailer, he actually thinks it's a flaw with the lugs and does not completely blame the detailer. The detailer swears he torqued them to spec, which I provided to the detailer from my shop.

I know 100% that the issue is resolved. Every time I brought it in during troubleshooting, the tick was gone after torqueing and would come back in a short period of time. The wheel was moving on the hub because of the loose lugs and probably making the spacer tick as well. I really want my spacers back on at some point. My shop does not want to make the call to Dinan to place blame for a few weeks of me driving. I can understand that. So it's probably going to be a month or so before I have them back on.

I have had these 12/17 spacers on since last summer and man, does it look different without them. The wheels really sink in.

Given my sound is similar to yours, does any of this resonate? Do you have spacers? Were your wheels removed and remounted around the time this started for you?

Mine was stipped back to the hubs for the camber arms and roll bars to be fitted so maybe I have play between the hub and the brake disk as per the service bullet-in. I checked my wheel nut torque with a proper click wrench at it was okay not slack. So I think I'm going to buy the friction discs and have them fitted along with the new M performance brakes.

Had a clicking nose when backing up on my g12, and it was a common wheel bearing issue. Both fronts were replaced under warranty

Yeah I would have thought wheel bearings were the root cause of slow rolling/turning noise and fiction disks were for vibration.

Plot twist.... Put my old wheels back on before taking the car into the dealer tomorrow. I cleaned off the brake rotors with degreaser and the bastard is fixed!

I think the issue was left over anti-seize from the BMS wheel spacers. This lubricated and caused micro movement of the wheels.

Sounds similar and related to my issues, which were spacer and or lug related. He also cleaned and lubed. Did you put the wheels back on and see if it's gone?

I still haven't put my spacers back on. He is trying to get Dinan to foot the bill for new lugs and spacers.

The car is rebooked at the dealer for Thursday to have the M performance brakes fitted and coding done, so I'm rolling OEM till then to avoid getting any grief.

Okay forged wheels back on and its all good now!

So for the benefit anyone searching threads in two years time, make sure your brakes and wheels are completely clean of grease before spending any money.

Good news. I also wonder if the spacers and bolts that were removed can be put back on with a good cleaning and lubing. I am not sure they actually tried this. I think what they did was remove the spacers and the bolts that came with the spacers, lubed the brakes, cleaned the hubs thoroughly and then put the same 668M wheels back on with the stock bolts and called it a day and deemed the spacers and bolts the problem. After they did this the noises were and are 100% gone. The shop is going back to Dinan for replacements but Dinan has been unresponsive. I really want my spacers back on, but not at the expense of the embarrassing clicking. It is a really good shop though, so they probably did their due diligence. They also troubleshot it three times prior including installing the BMW friction rings. The loner lugs kept becoming loose in my case, so that has nothing to do with lubing and cleaning.

I just want that flush look before I put it away for the winter. If they don't hear back, I may just get another setup by a different maker. I always thought the rears would look better with 20mm's (vs. 17mm) so this may be an opportunity. I think 12mm up front is just right.

What brand spacers are you using?

I was using BMS spacers on the 668M wheels (15/12).

My 'FI-R alikes' are back on now with offsets equivalent to 18mm and 15mm spacers

Dinan is replacing all of my spacers and bolts. I was using 12/17 front/back with 668M's. I am going to go with 20mm out back this time. Always felt the back could use a little more.

I am sure they won't alter my warranty replacement 17's to 20, so I am just going to buy the 20's and the bolts. I'll sell the new and unopened 17mm spacers and bolts.

This started for me tonight. Right hand wheel, left hand turns. Can only hear it because I had the windows down. Happens at low and higher speeds. Sounds like a metallic crackle. I’ve had spacers on for 2 years and thus is new. Seems to happen once the car/brakes are warmed up as it wasn’t there when I first started driving.

Thinking I will take the wheel and spacer off and degrease the mating surfaces as the first thing to try. Also gives me a chance to check the lug tightness.

Definitely remove the front spacers and put back on the original lugs. As I’ve chronicled here, my issue was “stretched” lugs that kept loosening even after torqued correctly. The loosening caused the tick. Once my shop took them off and went back to stock, the tick was gone and stayed gone.

Over a year later with the new replacement Dinan lugs and spacers and all is good. I’ve even had the front tires replaced since which meant taking the wheels off and reinstalling and tourquing and all is good.

Seems my detailer over torqued the first set of Dinan lugs and stretched them out. My shop said they still should not have done this so it makes you wonder about the material used on the Dinan lugs.

I torqued the front lugs to spec and a couple on each side were a touch looser than spec. They were last torqued in front of me by the tyre shop checking the wheels were round and balanced correctly. Definitely not overtorqued.

I then drove it and the ticking is still there, perhaps a little better. I can make it do it just sitting still and spinning the wheel left and right but it's nowhere nearly as bad. It does require some steering lock but certainly not full lock.

I think I'll drop the drivers wheel off and do the degrease and put it back on. I can measure the lugs at the same time and see what happens. It's so weird that it just started happening.

I also have this noise and have had it before the spacers. I notice it when backing out of the driveway and turning left. I believe the noise is from the front left.

Have you had the shims installed?

Attached. I had them installed as part of my troubleshooting, but these weren't the issue for me as a matter of process of elimination.

That is interesting piece of information. I am not 100% sold this is the issue to be honest. I almost want to point the issue at the axel but I could totally be wrong. I am not overly concerned either. Funny thing, for me the noise is only present when backing out of the driveway and turning left. If I back out and turn right the noise is not present.

Yeah, doesn't sound like these would solve your symptoms.

I dropped the drivers wheel off and degreased all surfaces and was surprised how much grease there was.

When I had the wheels balanced the guy checked all surfaces and even smoothed off the back of the spacer as there was a possibility of raised areas where the previous mob had tried to lever the spacer off (it was stuck). The guy did a good job but never degreased the surfaces so perhaps that thin layer of grease was causing the noise.

I did a quick drive yesterday and the noise had gone. Also found a supplied for the longer wheel lugs in case I need to buy new ones if the current ones prove stretched.

EDIT: the noise is gone, so cleaning worked.
