Ask dealer to switch out wheels?
So, yeah, as the subject line states, I have found an M5C at a dealership within reasonable distance from me, ALMOST exactly as I would have ordered it. Just ONE thing—the wheels. Has anyone ever been this route before, where you found the almost-perfect spec, but one thing was different, and how did you handle it? Has anyone ever asked a dealer to switch out wheels for them before, prior to purchase? Just not too sure how that would go.
I could order one exactly as I want, and I have been talking to my local dealer about doing just that, but here is one ALMOST exactly what I would have ordered, and I could have it within maybe a day or two. |

ehh.. depends how bad they wanna make a sale. bmw had screwed up one time, and the dealer wanted to move the car so not only did i get the set of wheels i wanted, they even powdercoated them too.
Worst case, if they wont do it for free, have them residualize it into the lease. |

The issue is where to do they get the wheels from? I doubt they carry sets of wheels in the back and they cant remove a set from another car as that would violate the msrp/build of that car.
You could ask them order the correct set but then you are stuck with 2 sets. I just go aftermarket in regards to the adjustment if the only issue is color.

Yup. My dealer found exactly the car I wanted, except it has the 20" gloss black wheels and I wanted the 19" M 5 spoke wheels. They made the swap no questions asked.

Did you lease your car because if you go to lease term; the savvy BMW FS lease inspection guys (Im being sarcastic) might check the size of the wheels

I had my dealer change them, only because they had Pirelli tires and that was a no go. But, they had another M8 with the identical wheels and Michelins, so they made the switch. The problem is the Monroney sticker, and which wheels it shows are being sold with the car.

In my experience they'll likely do it for you if they can swap with another car. I've had tons of items that they took from other cars on the lot. Just makes me wonder what they told those buyers.... hope they didn't notice or kick the can down the road??

So they told me that they couldn’t do it, because they would have to take it from another vehicle on the lot, and their sticker would be inaccurate then. So, they offered me the opportunity to buy them myself, or to have theirs painted. Lol

When I got my M5C earlier this year I wanted black wheels instead of the standard silver 789m wheels. They wouldn't switch them with another m5 that had the wheels I wanted but offered to powder coat them no charge. In the end I decided I liked the 789m just fine and didn't have the powder coating done and I believe the 789m are forged whereas the black 706s are cast (if I remember correctly) so that's a plus too.

But I'll lean towards you're right given the MSRP difference of the wheels. Like ~$1,100 vs $1,400 for the same size suggests the 706m's are probably cast compared to the 789's. It's either that or something something competition tax. Who's gonna weigh these suckers and get to the bottom of this? |

I can tell you the 706M are not forged. I switched them out for a pair of rotary forged wheels. Now I can't give you the exact weight difference but what I will tell you holding them both in each hand they felt significantly diff weight wise.

Mine was a buy. I think it simply depends on how bad the dealer wants a sale. Mine was willing to not only significantly discount the car (10%+) but also swap the wheels, even at their cost if needed. I think they were just really hurting for a sale. And this was pre-Covid (last fall). I would think they'd be even more motivated today.

Same thing here again. If you know anything about wheel design and forging processes its next to impossible to get something that looks like the 706M's also. |

some dealers agree to swap , some don't
I bought a Carrera S in 2014 , dealer stock car, and the only option I did not like was wheels. I asked to swap the wheels , they did and deal was done... |

But if you know anything about the forging process, you'd know the 706m design is well within the capabilities of a forged wheel. Hate to break it to you, look at anyone who makes forged wheels and you'll find designs far more complex. There's literally a company that sells a replica that's a forged 706m proving the ability to forge that design. |
