I didn't read the whole thread, my M5 is out of warranty, is this something BMW will pick up? Or is it all out of pocket?

From pocket...

I too had mine replaced out of warranty and paid something like $200,00.

As above they will charge you for it out of warranty.

It will be a lot more than a couple hundred bucks if the coolant has gotten to coils and injectors

Ordered new tank. Will let indie replace it and change coolant with pressure test. Hope all goes well. Looks like new tank is low on stock as well, FYI.

Recognize this is an old thread, but curious regarding your experience with the heat reflective tape. Do you believe it has helped to prevent more failures of the expansion tank. Just bought a 2019 M5 with maintenance records showing the tank has already been replaced once, so will try your solution if viable

Recognize this is an older thread. Did the heat reflective tape help in preventing additional failures?

I may be the only person who has tried the heat reflective tape. I applied it to the underside of the upper heat shield as well as the underside of the tanks. Tanks is plural because I did engine and intercooler coolant tanks, and I used new tanks as preventative maintenance. I think this was in the summer of 2022. A significant additional factor is that I also wrapped my down pipes (though not the cats) with lava wrap and put DEI GT22 turbine blankets on the turbines.

Here’s my install of a billet tank to avoid these issues. Link is in the description of the video for the part from RK Autowerks

I saw your video installing the coolant catch pan (along with 90% of your other content ). Did the coolant catch pan fail or not protect as intended? I would like to mitigate this issue/risk ASAP but not thrilled about a 1300+ coolant res unless that is the only option. Any feedback on the catch pan would be much appreciated.

Edit: just realized you installed the billet res tank an another person's M5. However, I would still like any feedback on the catch pan. Do you plan on moving to the billet res tank yourself?

I was under warranty and still had to pay. They refused to recognize it as a known problem.

No, dealership just said they couldn't find a source of leak. I paid out of pocket for a replacement reservoir with the new part number. They wouldn't acknowledge this being a known issue.

I'm ok with the fact that they didn't recognized it wasn't a know issue, after all, they certainly don't read forums.

Even if they weren't able lo locate the leak, you got a low coolant message on iDrive, right ?

If so, this is not your problem, wether they locate or not the leak.
They have to solve the problem under warranty.

I had already topped off the coolant reservoir myself, so the error message was gone. If it had thrown a error code, they didn't acknowledge it. They would not cover to replace the tank.

If your car develops a coolant leak I’d recommend after replacing a expansion tank do a pressure test to the fill cap, a lot of times cap fails to open at designated coolant system pressure and it causes next weak spot to fail, and it’s expansion tank.
Then you instal a billet tank and it will cause a radiator to swell/blow. Or water pump failure…

If I'm reading your post correctly. The billet coolant res tank from RK autowerks caused or leads to a radiator and/or water pump failure? Or, are you pointing to the coolant res tank cap as root cause?

I've been looking at different solutions to this issue and so far the coolant catch pan, while not solving the issue, seems best for protecting from engine damage.

What? Who cares if they know about it (and they have clearly being living under a rock)! It failed under warranty period.

Agreed, but the dealer pressure tested it (allegedly) and said no leak was observed. They refused to acknowledge that it's a problem that needs a proactive/preventative replacement. So, I paid for the replacement tank and installation, but I had it done at my trusted independent shop. I had no interest in the dealership overcharging me for parts and labor, and having some 16 year old tech who couldn't locate their left ass cheek do the work.
