I was literally with the SA and he was walking me through the car while F&I was getting the papers ready... when SA got a phone call from the Manager. In the time that the car was delivered from the port of Baltimore to the dealership - just one day - BMW has issued a stop-sale on all 5ers and some additional models for some sort of emissions issue with the fuel tank. The information was murky on the stop-sale order presumably because BMW is not yet sure what the root cause or fix is. So I couldn't buy the car tonight. I have to wait till BMW gives further instructions to the dealer on what the fix is... hopefully it's programming and not a new part we have to wait for, or worse, engineered.

Others who are picking up their cars and haven't yet, be forewarned! And if anyone has more information, please post up here...

This shit sucks. Was supposed to take delivery of my new M5 today and same story (sorry we cant deliver due to recall issues). They had know about this for a while now and they still have no fix for it CMON. Sounds like BMW BS to me. 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

Whoa from the pic above it looks like the as yet unreleased G80/82 M3's also have this issue.

This really does seem like a software problem plaguing all the current M cars (save the M2).

Well it doesn't affect cars built after 11/4 so if it was a software issue they would have a fix already? Feels more like a parts issue

Fair point, but they could also have stopped production (or simply, shipping) while awaiting the fix. We just don’t know.

I would imagine a complete production stop would be prohibitively expensive and cause massive supply chain ramifications. Likelihood is that cars are still being produced with anything subject to the stop being quarantined at the plants, ports or even dealers.

My guess is whatever the fix ends up being is cheaper to do at the ports and dealers, than a production line interruption. Now if the fix isn't available for weeks or months, that's a different story.

We are now a week since the issue was published, and likely much longer since it was discovered/analyzed/discussed internally at BMW. Getting frustrated at the lack of any updates.

While not a major issue, but still PITA, I have had to cancel tint and tire swap (to all seasons) appointments, car insurance changeover, and I am quickly approaching the need to extend the lease. Plus another purchase of extra lease mileage, since I am going to go over my allocation again.

and.... what really worries me is my front brakes. 10,000 miles ago the dealer said they were almost gone. Have a bad feeling if the hold keeps going, I am going to see that service light come on.

Agreed. I also think BMW is simply “quarantining” (to use your word) the produced cars until the fix is finalized and then applied at VPC’s or dealers.

Talked with two people that I trust. They both said no idea on what the fix will be or the the timing. Told me drive the car, if light comes on call them lol.

Fingers crossed it gets sorted quick and you get your car. They should do something for you! It involves a lot of cars.
Sounds like the light WONT come on so who cares. Lol!!!

Word is it's a software issue and there's a program coming out on the 18th to fix it. Fix will take about 1hr. Not sure if it can be done OTA for current owners affected or if they will have to take their cars in

That's great news, but was it from a reliable source?

Yea I was supposed to pick up my M8 GC this Saturday. Called the CA after I heard of the stop sale. He checked on it and let me know my car is also affected and told me about the program so moved my pick-up to next Wednesday.

Yes, great news indeed if it's legit and only a software fix that's releasing by next week.

Amazing to me how much BMW keeps dealers, and owners quite frankly, in the dark. Horrible communication for a luxury brand.

Yea that's crazy! How is it my CA gets an update but other dealerships don't. Someone is either lying or BMW just sucks at effective communication.

I've worked with this CA for a while tho. He is an honest guy. If he didn't know he would just tell me he doesn't have an update yet. So I believe him when he says 11/18 is the date a fix program is coming out for this issue. We'll see.

This is true. Such bad communication from this brand and dealership on this issue. Guess we have wait to hear it straight from BMW NA, Genius or a known insider before trying to make any sense of this. It's hard to know which recent updates are credible and which are not.

I just spoke with a BMW Genius rep and they reached out to a supervisor and confirmed that there is no additional information and proposed fix or ETA at this time other than what the issue is (tank vent). So I'm guessing the software story was just a story. Rep said the recall was initiated 11/5 and are still investigating so they should have a better idea of fix and ETA by next week.

Someone in the thread mentioned getting a Porsche instead. Don't try a 911. The 2021s have been stuck at ports for ages. Some since late August. Something about EPA/CARB certification not have been obtained for it yet. Dealers and people who ordered 911s are livid.
