M5 vs E63 S - Long Distance Driving
Got to say, a friend of mine under my influence bought an E 63 AMG S 2019 with no miles (car stuck in inventory) with massive discount. Awesome car. He gave me the keys for a long travel, and boy has this completely changed my mind. The car is not a good long distance cruiser at well, it is far too stiff and too loud. After 2h of hard driving you just want it to shut up. Far more road and tyre noises too compared to the M5.
At this point, I am less than inclined to trade my M5 F90. It is a "bit boring" in a small quick drive, but it is an awesome long distance car. |

Well we both have each car (I think you had the E63S) and the dominating factor, outside of the terrible tech (commodore 64 slow), was the ride quality even where I drive. Loud is great.... until it isnt. Spirited drives and cruises beg for exhaust feedback but long freeway drives not so much.
The E63S was acquired in 2017 and I sold it 10 months later and picked up my F90. Ive had my F90 for a little over 18 months. There is no way the roles would be reversed.

Do we know which one sells better? e63s or the M5? I can't seem to find any readily available numbers.

I know the forums are not the best sampling to gauge off but there are far more M5 owners (F90) who post than there are W213 E63 ones. Id guess BMW only because of how the dealer inventories were from day 1 and how the cars lease really well compared to the E63S. So my uneducated guess would be the F90.

Rumor has it Mercedes will be making the refreshed E63S ride softer after owner complaints from the current version. I personally don't mind the ride, however I also have an M2 so I guess I'm use to the harsher ride quality.

Comparison
I just picked up a brand new 2019 E63S after driving BMW for the past 12 years (335xi, E70 X5 50i and F15 X5 50i). While the ride is clearly harsher than what I am used to in the X5, it is perfectly pleasant in comfort mode on the highway. I am riding on 20" Pirelli P Zeros. There is some tire noise but the exhaust is definitely not intrusive.
I drove the F90 at an M Town event last year. After spending plenty of time in the drivers seat of various AMG's at the AMG Driving Academy at Lime Rock and Laguna Seca, my impression of the M5 was that it was "too good." Too quiet, too polite, not enough exhaust. I know it is technically a touch faster than stock E63S, but it has less personality. I do miss the BMW tech, which is still better than MB, but the AMG puts a big smile on my face every time I hear the exhaust! Just my impression! |

I didn't get to own the E63 S (a pity, because I did want it), but I like it a lot. I think it moved the game, and made BMW go full out in the F90. It is funny how roles have reversed. The M5 went from being the crazy bonkers almost race car like to the comfy supersaloon, while the E63 went from the comfy supersaloon to the bonkers side. But yeah the exhaust is too loud and the ride too harsh for long journeys. Great car for 110-120 miles. Longer distances it gets tiring quickly. |

I agree that the 2021 LCI E63s sedan looks incredible especially with grey paint. Seriously looking at that for my next daily driver. New suspension should help out with longer than 130 mile drives. The M5 LCI I like it also just no driver involvement, everything appears too easy maybe someone here can convince me I'm wrong.

Looks like the ride quality has been fixed greatly in the latest C/D review.

I moved from a 740 to the M5 Comp and whilst there’s no denying the extra road noise and the harsher ride it is not too bad at all. The E63S I have driven and completely agree it’s quite a bit firmer and noisier than my M5 and at the other extreme the RS6 is closer to my 740 than even my M5.
I reckon on this occasion BMW has struck the right balance between comfort and performance. |
