My local dealer had to order the fluid also. LOL

Thanks for the heads up!

This is a big problem for BMWNA. My car had to sit in the shop for 3 days until they were able to get the rear diff oil and it took a lot of effort for them to do that. Definitely make sure they have it before you bring your car in.

Can you specify if those oils are either/or, or does the car need both?

And for the 1200 service do they also do an oil change? I asked and they assured me they have the proper oil filter in stock. I don't want to leave my car at the dealer for a week waiting on a friggin oil filter. Been through that BS with Audi on my A8L. Even after asking that they check to make sure they had the correct parts for my car (first year on the 4.0 liter V8).

I spoke with Burdick BMW in Cicero, NY, about the parts/fluids needed for the 1200 mile service. He was very helpful.

The oil filter is the same as in the X5M and any other V8 M car.

The Front Differential fluid is available and is in stock.

The Rear Differential Fluid is the issue. There is currently none available in the US. Not a drop.

I am waiting to hear from the dealer from which I bought the car as I requested a copy of the current 1200 mile service bulletin. (I have seen prior year's bulletins, but the new M5 is obviously not on those bulletins).

BMW NA reads this forum. They know it’s a major blunder but have not responded with more supply or an alternative oil. There is no oil magic. An engineer spec’d a bit more zinc, sulfur, etc and the supplier was caught off guard. BMW should have stepped up but has failed miserably. No 1200 mile service = No CPO and warranty questions. My M5 has been parked since April 30 waiting on freaking oil. Unbelievable.

Ok, I'm starting to get worried. I take delivery next Tuesday, so I know the clock is ticking. I reached out to my SA and he informed me that they have the rear diff fluid in stock, but had to order the front, and said it will be here by the end of the week. That's the exact opposite of what was said above regarding availability. Starting to think this is going to be a disaster, especially if they use the wrong fluid on the wrong diff.

Has anyone here had their 1200 mile service done? Is the transfer case also something that gets a fluid change at 1200?

Why is your car sitting? I had my service advisor write on the paper work that car was safe to drive until fluids were in stock. Covered my ass and drove the car for 500 miles until the fluids were finally available. Had the service done then. I mean it’s a very unprofessional issue to be having but no reason your car has to sit unless Bmwna is refunding you for the days you aren’t able to drive it.

Same rear diff fluid thing happened to me with our x5m a few years ago. No one had it and we drove the car for an additional 2k miles before it was changed. The dealer put it in writing that it was ok to drive until they received the fluid.

No doubt it’s safe to drive. CPO has been denied on multiple M’s that skipped the 1200. That’s a fact.

I thought it odd that the front and rear differential would use a different oil. How different could they be? It's very odd, I'd love to hear the reasoning. If for example one type is cheaper and "ok" for one differential but the other is more expensive and must be used in the other differential, then could not the better fluid be used in both?

It's odd.

This, without any issues.....since the Lucas Gear oil has held my launches like this for 10 years....I don't think the M5 will stress it too much

For those who had the 1200 service, how long did it take for you? I also need to have them do the recall programming for the drive train malfunction.
