Pirelli Tires Hammering My Paint

I’ve driven 6,000 with the Pirellis that came on my M5C and I’m constantly hearing *tink tink tink tink tink* when driving around. It’s starting to damage my paint and I’m concerned BMW is going to ding me for it when I eventually turn in the lease. I’ve never had this issue before with any other tire brand I’ve had on my other M cars. I live in the burbs of Los Angeles so it’s not like I’m driving on country roads.

Has anyone else noticed this or having the same issue?

Had the same thing happen on my ZL1 and my friend had the same on his wide body redeye. Rocks and debris kicked up. Ended up getting PPF on those panels.

If it's small rock chips it's wear and tear and won't affect lease return. Read up on the lease return guide

Yeah Pirelli seems to be picking up way more rocks and crap from the road than other tires, many people noticed it from what I read on these forums.

You can add this to the long of cons about pirelli tires. I can't wait to swap to Michelin's once winter is over

No spacers. 100% stock. The wheels do stick out further from body of the car and mix this with crap tires, it’s a recipe for paint damage. It honestly makes me mad I lease a $125k car and it’s damaged so soon because of junk tires bmw put on it. I shouldn’t need to put clear film on that part of the car just because I wasn’t fortunate to get the Michelin tires. Ugh

The paint in general on this car is shit. Water-based PPG. You touch it wrong and it scratches. My F10 held up much better in comparison.

What did people do before PPF got popular.

Agree, it's not the tyres, but the paint.

I made the mistake of not having PPF - why should I, as I've never had it on any other car?!

Six months, 6,000 miles in and the front is peppered with marks, so it's currently in for correction and front end PPF.

Never known a car to look as bad after such a short time.

I have the same problem with my Pirellis and assumed that's just because they are sticky tires. Are Michelin tires a better choice to avoid kick up of pebbles? Aren't Micbelins sticky as much as the P's, thus having the same problem?

It's not really about shit tires... any sticky tire is going to pick up rocks. The sticker the tire the better the traction.

You're also AWD, so the fronts are throwing up debris more forcefully now.

I’ve had both tires on my car. I started with the Pirellis and I also noticed that little rocks would get flung around. But it was always in the wheel well and not on the paint. But for me, it went away after I put some miles on the tire. Like it needed to break in. I didn’t need to do 6000 miles (like OP) before it stopped for me.

I did change to Michelins after the first winter. They did not fling rocks as much. I didn’t notice it and my new wheels stick out more so I would have been more concerned of the paint.

I have the Pirellis and all I hear are tiny pebbles constantly bouncing off the paint. It's super annoying after a few months on my winters tires that don't exhibit this behavior.
I understand sticky is good but, I agree, the rock chatter is somewhat extreme.

This is why I never drive a new car on the road until I have PPF installed. I had my detailer pick up my car at the performance center with his covered trailer. He is doing PPF and Modesta coating this week. It means 1 more week of waiting before I have my new car, but it's totally worth it when I can drive it with less worry about rock chip damage.

OP, where are you seeing the most damage? On the front quarter panel? Rocker panels? Rear side of bumper?
