Considering it's going to be all wheel drive this is hardly likely.

I think we can be lucky if it stays under 2 tons (weight with fluids and driver). Of course BMW will again do their spin-doctor-thing, claiming weight savings left right and center as they did with the M3/M4, but which will again be revealed as false advertising once you put the thing on scales.

Maybe they'll offer a free 3 years inclusive weight watchers program for potential buyers instead

^ This was the last I heard too, sticking to RWD, unless there is something else out there that confirmed one way or another.

Too bad. It should be AWD. And it should have an electric motor for low-end torque rather than turbos. And I have too many opinions today... LOL

So the F10 M5 has been around since 2012 right? And the F10 regular 5 series has been around since 2011?
Does anyone know then what is the point of the F90 M5? Is this gonna be on the same platform as the F10? what actually are they going to change?

I thought they would introduce the new 5 series first then change the M5 afterwards? but if the new 5 series comes out in 2018 then will the m5 change again in 2019?

It is not what we see but what can't see...

Hopefully AWD and some 150 KG weight reduction over the current car? Since we are in imagination land; some amazing engine noises similar to previous V8 M3 would be nice too.

New 5 series is launching next year and the new M5 should be introduced end of 2017 with production starting 2018

But is the new M5 again an F series/platform where as the new 5 series will be on the new G platform right?

right but it the new M5 is again an F series where as the new 5 series will be on the new G platform right?
I'm also lost with this
The new M5 should share the same chassis as the new 5... Especially if they want to shed some of the weight . I know that there has been a lot of discussion on this but did BMW ever confirmed the chassis number for the new M5 ?
I'm also surprised to see this much of the new M5 considering that the new 5 is not out yet ...

Well, let's see - I haven't seen any definite statement on this one way or the other.

Considering the hp / torque of these cars and their utter lack of driveability in anything but perfect weather / road conditions, in my opinion AWD is absolutely necessary. Other competitors have understood this already, it's just a matter of time until BMW does too.

Why should it be awd? That's going backwards in enjoyment

If you want an awd monster get an rs7. That's my favorite exec sedan out there for daily driving. Looks great and is a highway bruiser. M5 is a close second but doesn't look as sharp to me. Let's see how the new one looks. But let's keep the rwd so we can drift it.

Nope. IMO, small cars can be RWD but larger sedans get VERY fast with good AWD systems (see new Tesla 2.5s car with a LOT of weight). Ask any Subaru driver if AWD can be fun?

It's a bit embarrassing if e.g RS6, RS7, Panamera TS, Tesla can go 0-60 in less than 3s while M5 needs 4... AWD is now a necessity in this league, of course it should be strongly rear biased with capability to push 100% of power to the rear wheels.
I don't find it funny at all that Tesla can destroy M5 in a drag race, its not a big comfort neither that overall M5 is 5x better car.

They need to offer AWD, at least as an option, they are loosing a huge number of customers without it.

Don't forget AMG...

M5 is a much better car than the Model S... But I'd still choose the Tesla because of the drivetrain (primarily) which is incredible. The interior of the M5 is in a whole other league compared to the Model S though.

"F90 M5 (spy pics) is confirmed with the same engine as the current M5 (tweaks are possible of course) and xDrive only."

All magazines i read (germans) are writing that the next M5 is going to be AWD, up to date i've never heard something else. Ok, yes they could be all wrong. Even after the lastest spy pics and after Mr. Van Meel's interview they didn't change that fact.

Some are talking about an RWD optimized AWD... I've no idea what this means... Could it be a RWD and gets AWD when needed...?

So I believe and hope the next M5 is going to be AWD. I'm going to order one if it is so.

So now we have all options covered, somebody is for sure going to be right

1. RWD only
2. RWD with an optional AWD
3. AWD only
