Never claimed they were the same. Just dispelling the myth that fabled M cars come out of a cobblestone Bavarian workshop assembled by highly specialized M craftsmen. All these cars come off the same lines as the peasant models.

One car that is the epitome of an M-variant is the E28 M535i.

Glad to see the company is getting back to its roots. We should have an M-variant option (imo) on the sedan/coupe platforms. The worst, imo, is actually the SUV's, they're killing the homage

So I guess the 'poser' with the alpine white X3 M40i that pulls up next to me with the tricolor grille clips, the tricolor license plate frame and ///M all over his car is now a real ///M owner? I get and understand the 'M lite' models as MB makes a killing with C43 and GLC43 and other AMG lite models. But part of the allure of a real ///M car is they are much more rare and select and you pay for that along with a proper sport suspension and handling plus the best engine and performance tech BMW offers in that model. You cannot compare the X3 M40i to the X3M in any performance category. Yes the M lite models are probably better daily drivers and offer exceptional performance for the price. But no its not a true motorsports engineered vehicle.

My $0.02...

People if you want an M car, buy one with true pedigree - M and then a 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 - even a M850 is questionable

E28 M535i owners are SOL 🤔

Totally understand where you're coming from. However, the X3 M40 is not a part of the discussion nor should it be with any transverse config.

This thread if full of "M performance" owners shitting on people who own real M division cars.

People work hard to afford cars like the M3, M5, etc. Those cars are very expensive, aspirational, halo performance products that certainly deserve be in a category of their own. It's common sense.

Not the same caliber of "///M" that BMW has produced over the past 35 years if the VIN number doesn't start with WBS.

Don't get me wrong, the ///M340i is a great car but it seems like you could slap a ///M badge on anything that moves and is a BMW nowadays.

Common sense????

Ive owned both types, Im just not so insecure that I care what anyone else drives.

And dont kid yourself on who does what to obtain what they have, in the US lease deals can make Ms nearly the same actual cost as a performance line car, and they are everywhere and not exclusive in the US.

Such madness about a stupid badge, let your egos go people!!!!!

New approach makes sense since it's now all basically the same motor. In the older cars there were very different motors.

This is not an ego thing. I don't even own an M division product. I'm just a BMW enthusiast who sees this marketing gimmick for what it is.

There are significant engineering differences between true M division products and "M performance" products. As others have pointed out there are even different VIN numbers.

Every manufacturer of luxury goods has different grades of their product. That's what makes the finest and most expensive end of their line desirable. BMW is bastardizing their most bespoke product line.

and "real" m owners shitting on m performance cars, too... those cars are also damn expensive. my m340i cost 75.000 euro here in germany.
thats about 83.000 us dollar... so what?! me and other m performance drivers work hard, too. i am a law enforcement officer... believe me, i work my as off, too.
turns into a kindergarden here. if you like a m3... get it. if you prefer a m340i... go for it. i really dont understand where and what the problem is?!
both cars have its pros and cons. depends on preferences. like another pal already said, m drivers are crying because they aren't so special anymore and the m performance guys are happy because they feel more special... how childish is that lmao

peace!

Didn't we all drop the "performance" bit anyway? Not sure anyone referred to their M340i and an "M performance" model or a true M car for that matter.

We all know what an proper M car is.

Same approach as AMG with the C43.

Who cares? BMW M is a marketing branch of BMW now. The M badge means nothing anymore.

BMW takes a dump on heritage and legacy to make a buck by sticking the M badge on like 22 cars. They only care about making their commuter cars easier to sell to badge snobs with low self-esteem who can't be bothered with the ownership experience of a race-bred motorsport-derived automobile but want to feel a bit cooler about driving their snazzy German Camry.

They do deserve to be in a separate category, and they are. Look at the prices

Having owned both, I can't bring myself to understand your logic.
People work hard to own any car, period, that's common sense. Though most owners who paid MSRP or more than their annual salary to have the latest/greatest depreciating asset from BMW must justify their purchase when debating "value".

Most (new) M car owners are legit pussies as drivers and can't drive the cars to their factory limit let alone the limits of the cars after they dump $20k into performance modifications.

Most older "M" car owners can't afford to obtain or finance the newer cars, and they equally justify their ownership with "older is better, more raw, NA bro". Then there's the sensible ones, who buy what makes them happy, not what everyone thinks will be the best car, for them.. they get by just fine, too. The performance margins between the M cars of today, and their m-variants, make for another discussion altogether, the gap-up is no longer what it used to be.
