Thank you my friend. I will probably change the coolant reservoir @ 50,000 KM just to be safe anyway. It's a few hundred bucks for peace of mind.
I have fewer miles and have added antifreeze two or three times in a year and a half ownership. Less that 16 ounces total. No signs of a leak but both tanks were low. I check it regularly based on what I have learned here. I really do not understand where the coolant is escaping to though.

One more leaking expansion tank

I just got my 2019 M5 Comp (22k miles) 3 weeks ago and noticed the white residue on the expansion tank. It does seem like it leaked down a bit, but it doesn't seem to have damaged any components. But it is leaking and see the picture, quite a bit.

I sent the picture to my SA and he said to bring it right in. I did and left it with him and he ran over to parts to get a new tank. Under warranty and if they have one in stock he said the car should be ready in a day.

I will update when I hear more.

Woke up last week to my 19 Comp saying "Low Coolant". Brought it in for a top off and they saw all the residue and said the tank had a crack in it. Car was supposed to be completed today and just got a message from my service advisor saying "Tank is replaced but now the car is misfiring from all cylinders. We are going to need to replace the injectors and coils. Will be done in 2 days". So we will see what happens.

What is your mileage? Did you replace because of leaks or preventative maintenance?

It was replaced at about 32k. There was a coolant leak, you could visibly see the dried up coolant in the engine bay on the driver side under the tank. Even leaked on to my coils and all driver side coils were replaced. All under warranty

I picked up mine with 27k on it and had 2 weeks before the car lost half the motor. I was told that the injector holes where filled with coolant and the plugs where done too. They told me because the bmw deal that did the work before me didn't do it right and let coolant into the injector ports but they where also in there doing injectors.

I took the panels off the drivers side and I can see dried coolant everywhere so Im guessing it was from the tank.

Needless to say they changed all the injectors again all the plugs and 2 coils. He also told me that the other 2 coils are most likey going to fail at some point but they couldn't do all 4 at once per BMW. The car is now going back next week for starting then dying right away so I'm gonna have him check it out again and make sure theres nothing leaking.

On my way to pick up the car. 3-1/2 days in the shop. They found the tank to be leaking and fouled the 7 and 8 injectors. Replaced those and tank and a blow off hose. He said I was lucky to have brought it in when I did. But the only downside if I hadn't brought it in would have been rough idling and driving.

I will throw my hat into Coolant leak/smell.
My car has been in twice now with 13,800 miles on the clock.
I still smell coolant every time I pull into the garage and shut her down.
Never see anything on the garage floor. I've had 2 low coolant messages on I drive. All these aholes do at the dealership is "pressure test" the system and say its good to go. My SA tried telling me its normal for V8's to burn up coolant. It's very frustrating and complete bullshit.

Summer 2021 I was driving around and kept getting this TOXIC smell with windows down. Took it in and started explaining to the SA about the smell. He immediately goes, oh yea, theres a TSB on that for burnt coolant in the deep V section of the motor. What the F ???

Anyway they cleaned it up and smell was gone.

Haha my SA said this is common in BMW. this is why I don't now nor ever have trusted the dealer about anything regarding my vehicle. They are sheep.

That one is lean on top around the cap. Was it leaking around the horizontal seam of the top and bottom halves? Heat from the cat wound be greatest on the inside (towards middle of engine) where the white dust shows.

How do you disconnect the tank sensor? Do you need a tool?

Picked it up yesterday and my SA really jumped through hoops to ensure it was done and thorough. One complaint is that there was a lot of residual coolant residue in many places around the engine bay but it does seem fixed. Here is the text from the work order if it helps:

CUSTOMER STATES COOLANT LIGHT COMING ON
-Checked and found coolant level is low -Found there is evidence of leaked
coolant under the reservoir -Referred to SI B17 02 22 -Removed engine fan
cowl to gain access to and remove the lower radiator hose to flush coolant -
Removed the coolant expansion tank for inspection -Found there is an
excessive amount of coolant build up on the injectors on cylinders 7 and 8 -
Replaced injectors for cylinders 7 and 8 due to coolant contamination -
Cleaned area extensively, there is a significant amount of coolant residue in
the engine bay -Cleaned the ignition coils and removed spark plugs for
inspection -Spark plugs and coils are OK and do not require replacement -
Re assembled vehicle, replaced coolant reservoir and filled and bled
system -During replacement of the reservoir, the vent line from the
reservoir to the radiator was damaged. Removed driver side airbox and
replaced vent line

The harness will come off. I forget where the clip is. The sensor does not come out.

I am contemplating changing both coolant tanks for preventative maintenance. I rather deal with just the coolant tanks then wait for them to leak onto the coils and injectors. It appears it will cost me $229.83 for both tanks before shipping and taxes. My 2018 M5 is a weekend driver only with just under 11k miles since I purchased it new in August of 2018. Has anybody changed the two aforementioned tanks out themselves? Any pointers?
