The best answer to your query is to go out and test drive an M5 base and a M5 comp. It's the only way you will truly know if it's 'worth it' as there are some differences between ride and handling (how much of a difference is debated frequently). General consensus seems to be M5 comp sounds better, handles better, is a hair faster, but it's not as cushy a ride as the base.

If the things it brings are important to you then it's worth it.

It's certainly worth it to BMW

Short answer:
If you want track the car: yes
If you don't want to track the car: no

You are going to have a harsher ride in city driving.
I would get a non comp and spend the rest of the money on performance exhaust and some carbon.

"emotion light predecessor"?! Please don't tell me they are taking about the base M5! In same article, they say base does a "blazing" 2.8 to 60.
Comp is all about what you want or don't. I use mine as a daily and drive into Manhattan for work often and deal w/ all the shitty roads round NYC metro. Comp's harsher ride alone, kept me away. If it was a "toy", I would definitely have considered one..

Do you know why it sounds better? Surely its the same exhaust as the optional M sport exhaust no?

I have a custom-ordered standard M5. With dealer discounting I would have paid about $6900 for the Competition package. I haven't nor will I ever track this car. I have NEVER come upon a situation where I required more torque, acceleration or driving power than my standard M5 provides. The $6900, however, is buying a lot of carbon fiber and black gloss trim. I can live without the stiffer suspension and the Competition wheels/rear badge. It's purely individual (no pun intended!).

For me, it's competition. I just ordered a M5 Comp. Delivery in mid May. I very much prefer the Y spoke rims on the comp version. I never mod my cars so I spec the car the way I like it when I buy it.

Yes, I also drive it in Manhattan, so I just thought I'd solicit opinions on whether the documented equal performance was worth the extra cost for essentially cosmetic items. If prefer to spend the money on the aftermarket rather than what BMW thinks is more important.

I bought the Comp because I am a status whore There I admitted it.

The ride for me is too harsh and I never put it in sport mode. Having said that, I do think the Comp looks better with the Y wheels and the rear diffuser (one of the few who likes it).

It is still an insanely savage car. So much fun to drive.

I went with Comp and would absolutely make the same choice again if I had to. I will track mine occasionally, I like the wheels, the lower ride, the firmer suspension (has never felt TOO firm to me or my gf), the M Sport exhaust is REALLY nice once it breaks in, etc.. You can never have too much power/tq

FYI - The M sport exhaust on the comp is an option here in Canada when ordering a non-comp, which I did and really like.

If sharper handling is very important to you then it's worth it . The HP change is nominal. There is always after market mods

Any complaints w/ your M550i's ride in the city? If so, i'd steer clear of the comp. As it is, I typically have to put my non-comp in comfort mode, to tolerate the dam roads. Around the burbs, I leave it in sport and rarely go sport plus...

From Car and Driver: "The Competition sits on springs that are about 10 percent stiffer than those of the regular car, and the adaptive dampers have been retuned accordingly. Minor changes at the front increase suspension camber, with revised anti-roll-bar mounts firm up the front end. The engine has gained firmer mounts, and the rear axle has ball joints in place of the stock M5's rubber bushings, as well as a heftier anti-roll bar."

Actually, no real complaints despite the run-flat tires......I suspect the M5C with PS4s would be about the same......

Not sure, but best you test drive both. I'd try out all conditions, especially cobbles downtown. I frequently get off at Clarkston St, that is a rough cobble street, give that one a try.

Why settle for anything less than the best? I do a lot of city driving in my 2019 M5 comp and when you put it in comfort mode the ride is not harsh at all.

delusional. You can track either one fine. I'm not sure who is actually tracking a 4200lb car every weekend though.
