Impressed i just realized BMW come with Lithium Battery

I was cleaning the trunk and realize we have lithium battery as standard. Now I need to check the car if it can be jumped by a 12v? Is that only for the M? Does the F30's have these as well?

Also I'm even more impressed that BMW comes with a metal fuel lid!

All audi except R8, TT has that cheap plastic lid as well as Benz. Great job BMW for not replacing that with that cheap plastic.

Anyone yet find a trickle/battery charger for this? For those of us that live in cool climates.

Per BMW NA.

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

The new accessory Deltran 82 11 0 041 600 charger is recommended to charge lead-acid batteries only, it is not intended to supply power to dry-cell batteries such as Lithium-Ion batteries which is directly stated in the user’s manual.

Please be sure to advise your M3/M4 owners with a lithium-Ion battery that they cannot use our standard BMW Trickle chargers.

Both BMW accessory suppliers Deltran and C-TEK offer only lithium specific chargers via their websites…

Spoke to CTEK today, there 56-926 Lithium charger will work.
Cheapest price I found was $97.19 shipping & tax included.

Deltran's is not in stock and was told they have no idea when it will be.

I just received an email response from CTEK on my request to whether it would be OK to charge the new M4/M3 F8x with their CTEK Lithium XS.

The reply was:

...
Excuse a very late reply.
Yes, the charger is just right for these batteries

Best regards

I know that the F8X battery is a Lithium Ion battery, but does anyone know what's it chemical compound?

The reason I'm asking is because the CTEK Lithium US/XS charger is specifically for the Lithium Iron Phosphate (type of Lithium Ion) batteries, and I know that Lithium Ion batteries can come in different Chemical compounds like Lithium Manganese Oxide.

So has anyone looked into this or know the chemical compound of the F8X battery?

If you plan what you want to achieve with coding and take it slowly to start with, you don't need a battery charger or the engine running. I normally just switch on the ignition (not engine run) and am typically in and out of mine before it switches itself off.

I don't like the idea of having the engine running during coding, not because of fumes, but "just in case" you make a mistake and the wrong button is pressed, or the wrong ECU coded.

It is Lithium Iron Phosphate - LiFePo4 (Source: F80/82 Technical Training document).

Could be on the battery, or maybe a BMW of NA email question.

I checked my battery its 69amp/hour. I need to grab my meter and check the charging voltage and amperage while it's running.

I just purchased a CTEK Lithium Ion battery charger from Hoerr Racing Products via Amazon. The CTEK has an eight stage readout so you know where the battery is along the charging spectrum. 8 is fully charged.

I was surprised to see my battery was down to a 2 out of 8. Obviously the car sat on the boat from the mother land, and at the dealer for a short time (I bought it not long after it arrived). I got my car on 3/29/15 and have driven it at least every other day (20 miles per day). However, I have not driven it now for six days. Of course, this is why I bought the charger/tender.

Those of you who don't drive every day may want to consider a charger/tender.

Additional battery info + Charger

Thought I'd post an update to this thread based on my own experience.

I purchased my 2015 SO M4 from a dealer 2 weeks ago.

My M4 sat in their lot for over 3 months without battery not being hooked up to a battery tender or being recharged on a regular basis (BMW states charge monthly)

When I bought my car two weeks ago "Replace Battery ASAP" fault message came up.

Selling dealer admitted they failed to charge the battery properly so they will have to replace my battery. I drove the car home (230 miles) without battery dying on me.

I tried to charge it at home but it will no longer take a full charge and must be replaced.

Battery cost: $1,800.00. My battery is getting replaced by my local dealer tomorrow. They will charge the replacement cost to the selling dealer.

I use this for charging all types of battery and it works great. Works with Li-Ion battery too like ours.

http://www.amazon.com/NOCO-G3500-Ult...rds=noco+g3500

For those that have long winters - I highly recommend you keep your battery hooked up to a battery tender as if BMW determines the battery was not charged / maintained properly they may deny warranty claim.

Thought I'd share.

Dan

Question for those with the CTek charger - I have one and have hooked the car up to it in the engine compartment whenever coding - it has never gone past step 2 of 8 on the front of the charger - anyone else experience this?

When it gets parked for winter should it be hooked up to the battery in the trunk rather than under the hood? Wondering if there is some kind of circuitry blocking trickle charging from the engine compartment if ignition is not on?
