The filter housing of that high sounds odd...but that is what the manual says.

Maybe someone else can chime in.....

Thanks a lot Mike!

So had an interim oil change today at my independent garage. Car is on 13K miles and is an 04/2021 car.

My mechanic spoke to a friend who is a bmw master technician, actually at the dealership who do did my RIS and then 1st oil service.

They said its 40NM too, but apparently have cracked filter housings getting to that torque level...and now do then 25NM to 30 NM. We torqued mine to 30 NM.

On another note I swapped my original filter housing to the newer style housing with a drain plug, to help to minimise oil spillage when changing filters going forwards...better remind my dealership who will do my next scheduled change in circa 5K miles, to use the new filter element set, which comes with a new drain plug and washer.

Photo of old and new housings if anyone is interested.

My understanding is that the old style cap with drain used in prior BMWs does not fit our housing. We could call this a new cap in the old style.

I bought the billet aftermarket version before the BMW plastic one was available. Today I would just buy this plastic one.

Yes and it costs at least 5 times as much. But maybe alibaba is making cheaper copies now.

It does look like a nice funnel. I just pour directly into the filler port from about 3 feet up like I am pouring tea in Morocco. This funnel would reduce the cleanup afterwards.

I do mine hand tight with a ratchet and a quarter turn, like any other oil filter. Never leaked or had issues. 3 oil changes in, inspect it every time. Done this with all my BMW's. Only thing I torque down religiously is the drain plugs.

If you have strong hands with a good grip -- hand tight only. But, as you point out, only to gasket tight and then quarter turn. I can do that with my hands most of the time. Not all the time.

At least here in NYS, state law, if you sell oil you have to take back used oil no charge.

Most service stations gladly take it. Many burn it to heat their shops.
