If anyone needs the part numbers or PDFs for the transfer case fluid change, and/or the front and rear diffs, I have them. I was shocked how many metal filings we're in my transmission fluid pan after only 30k miles. Glad I changed it, and will be changing all of these fluids every 30k miles. So economical doing it yourself.

I think bmw service recommendations are 90% financial based and 10% engineering based. Plus or minus. Haha.
A very interesting thought.

A 75,000 mile interval for our ZF-8hp transmissions might help make them A LOT of money. But, leaving them might result in a destroyed transmission and a full replacement. Doubt that 75,000 mile and up M5's are getting this done at BMW though. And, that transmission is "off the shelf" from ZF and can be gotten from other "recycled" cars.

Not sure I agree with you. But, it's just a thought.

Shawn
By transmission do you mean transfer case? That's what I was referring to. I just find it weird some models they have service intervals like the M5. But the X5 and X5M they are "lifetime". I don't get that. And instead of repairing them they just opt to replace with a brand new one. Don't get me wrong they tried to put in a used one but my service advisor refused it with my permission as long as I didn't mind waiting for one to come from Deutschland

I'm sorry, I must have been tired. I DID actually mean transmission, because as you know BMW says this is "lifetime" fluid. This also applies to the transfer case as well.

But, I agree with you, that those fluids aren't "lifetime" in any way. But I'm not sure BMW makes financial decisions to NOT recommend fluid replacements on those. Seems to me, they would make a lot more money making us change them at 75,000. Just my $0.02

The tranny SOUNDS hard if you follow the BMW service procedure.

Any recommendations? Old fashioned knowledge is to drain, measure, and replace. But with the replaceable pan (which supposedly contains a filter), that sounds even more troublesome.

Interested in your procedure. (or did you have the dealer do it?)

Shawn
I did it myself, and I bought the ZF Lifeguard 8 fluid from FCP Euro (8 liters to make sure I had plenty). I also bought the replacement pan, filter, and bolts from BMW parts of South Atlanta. It was easy to locate the drain and fill plugs, and the procedure for changing the fluid is from ZF. You have to have the car level, drain the fluid, remove the pan and replace it with a new filter and new bolts, torques in a specific pattern and to a defined torque value. Very easy access after removing the skid plates. Once done, I used a foxwell scanner to monitor temperature of the transmission. You initially refill to overflowing the fill hole, start the car and let warm up, do a specific shifting procedure, then top off to the fill plug once the scanner states you've reached temperature. Then torque the fill bolt, replace the skid plate, and you're done. I'll try to post the procedure PDF from ZF.
Do you have a lift to be able to shift and monitor temperatures. Do you have the PDF service manual available for purchase online?

This will help. Might be a plastic pan like BMW uses on some models but the ZF 8 speed is widely used — in many cars and trucks from many brands — and the process is similar for all. We have finned aluminum pans with drain plugs, which is nice.

I am sure you have a scan tool. Which one do you have/recommend?

It seems hard to find a really capable one that does not have a subscription requirement to keep the features and those subscriptions are hundreds of dollars a year. I have a Launch x431 PAD V, but it is more than you need for this.

I’d look into what the $400 Autel MX808 can do ($100 per year subscription). I used one briefly and then changed to the much more capable $1200 MS906BT that requires an annual subscription that costs as much as the MX808 alone, and then changed to the $2400 Launch x431 PAD V.

The cheapest option that may have the potential is the Foxwell NT510/520/530 with the BMW specific module that you can choose and download for free when registering the product. I have had an NT510 for years and used it when changing diffs and transfer and trans fluids in my E61 535xi but am not sure whether it can do what would be needed on the F90.

I have the fluids for the diffs and transfer case but have not changed them yet so I have just been gathering info on the jobs. I’ll do the trans fluid after I do those.

I have the Foxwell NT510 and it IS useful. It CANNOT yet do the brake service (retract the motors). I did not check tranny temperature scan because the service procedure I read from BMW is about like rubbing your head while patting your foot and chewing chewing gum to the tempo of The Flight of the Bumblebee, and I know it doesn't have the features the BMW procedure needs.

PRO TIP!

I HIGHLY suggest you all add a magnetic drain plug to your diff cases!!!

Troy Jeup made an IG post on his IG page about this. He shows HOW MUCH shavings can collect in there in such a short time!

Protect your self and your car. add magnetic drain plugs

Don't recommend. Or at least Be careful. They can also be too long and make contact with the gears inside. Saw this issue on the X5M side of the house.

There is one brand that uses a very short magnet. Maybe called dimple.

I 100% agree on the length! You are right. Be sure to match the length of the plug. Thank you for the correction.

What size is the drain plug? I'm no where close to needing this service yet but like compiling data in my service logs I build.

Rear diff is M22x1.5 PN 33117525064. Not sure about front diff and transfer case. I’d probably buy magnet plugs just for the drains and not for the fills.
