So…I'm nervous. I'm trading in my 2018 M3C for a 2021 M5 base. I love my F80. I'm running a BM3 stage 2 93 tune. I love how I can throw it around and it's fast for what it is.

As I've gotten older (41) the M3 beats me up a little bit. Long drives are tiring. The wife doesn't even like driving it because "you actually have to drive the car". Not that I even trust her to drive it.

My question is, for you that have made the upgrade, did you regret it?

Also, I plan to tune with BM3 again. What HP gains can I expect on stage 2? Yes I have searched.

Thanks in advance.

I sold my E90 M3 after 10 years for an F90 M5. You are a step closer with an F80 M3 in terms of trading road feel for power. I wanted a bigger, more comfortable, faster car that was able to put the power down more often under more circumstances due to the AWD. It is numb-er but you are already used to that. The power is very smooth due to the 50% greater displacement. I like mine, but don’t pretend it is sporty or has a lot of feel. Sticks well and has surprising limits and is fast and comfortable and practical. Would make a great companion to a 911 Turbo, which is my plan. I have an E36 M3 turbo as a toy and a new Cayenne S as a truck.

OP,

Just shy of 5 months of ownership with my F90C. I came from an F82 M4 that I owned for 6 years prior to taking delivery of the M5.

I may not be in the “exact” same boat as you- my M4 was a 2015MY. Fully loaded, minus the CCB’s. Competition was not offered when I bought that car. My M5 is completely loaded, and also Individual spec.

My wife hated my M4 from day 1. It was YMB, KW’s, MPE, and also tuned with BM3 Stage 1.

To answer your question: It all depends on your driving needs and expectations. We became parents this year, so the 4 door vs 2 door argument was a no brainer. The M5 is just a completely different level of car. Do you want to be fast as f*** or do you want to be super fast, super comfortable, and super respected.

I would get a lot of attention and thumbs up in my M4, but from younger guys, or enthusiasts only.

Everyone knows, and respects the M5’s heritage. It is by all means, “the ultimate successful mans car” and earns that respect when anyone is around it. Everyone knows what an M5 is, and has witnessed it’s greatness generation after generation, whereas the M3/4 is very cool, and perfect for that specific buyer demographic, it’s still in the category of “boy racer”.

Now I say this as a male in my 30’s. I imagine you’ve shared some of these same thoughts. You’ll be pleasantly surprised, and exceptionally happy with the upgrade. My wife not only LOVES my F90, but also loves riding in it, and also driving it (when she’s allowed) and comments immediately on the world of difference it is over the F8x generation

I've gone back and forth between the two. I had an E90 M3 and then got a F10 M5. I absolutely loved that M5. So fast, so comfortable.

After the M5 I had a X5. From there I wanted more of a handling car so I got the F80 M3CS. I never thought I'd like an M car more than I liked the F10 M5, until I got that. It was phenomenal. I also did a BM3 Stage 1 tune and loved it.

Last month I picked up my M5CS and once again am thinking that I'll never liked another M car more than this one!

So, long story short, if your ready to move into the M5 then your just ready. You'll always have time to move back to an M3 at some point if you miss it.

never buy a car thats not what you want to please your wife, if you're the primary driver, what's it matter? Its like people picking a car and optioning in out for resale, at this price point what you want is what should matter the most

I owned a 15 M3 (F80) for 4 years and transitioned into my 18 M5 (F90) that I have had for just over 3 years. I have mixed feelings about the F90. The one thing I do not care for is the size of the car. My wife of over 35 years does not care to drive the F90, I know that could be a blessing but she can drive and I have no issue with her driving it. She misses the F80 and wishes I never got rid of it.

The M5 is a fast comfortable vehicle and it was what I was looking for at the time of purchase. It is just me and the wife with no children so no need for a back seat. At the time my wife looked at me when we came back from test driving the 911 S back in 2018 and she stated, "You are crazy if you think I am going to Las Vegas in that vehicle". Now we fly from San Diego to Las Vegas when we travel so it is no longer an issue. We have several other vehicles in the house hold and motorcycles. I went with the F90 over a new 2018 Porsche 911 S and there are days I wish I went with the 911 over the F90. As I look forward to my next vehicle I am considering the soon to be released 911 GTS or Corvette C8 Z06.

The F90 is a great vehicle but it is still a 4 door sedan at the end of the day and I miss the size of my F80. I should have never traded it in. I would definitely spend some time doing some extended test drives. The power of the M5 is intoxicating and it was one of the main reasons I went with the M5.

Nothing beats having both. I've had my F80 for five years now and my wife drives it from time to time. Last year I got her a used M550i but three weeks ago decided to sell it because of the high used car pricing. After selling the M550i my wife began driving the M3 again but now complains it's too harsh riding and she misses her big comfortable luxurious M550i. Also at the same time I began to hate driving the family hailer Q7 every day. Just felt so boring and like I wasn't driving a car anymore. I missed driving the M3 because I felt so alive driving it.

Two days ago I got a good deal on a used 2019 MBB M5 and bit the bullet to buy it for my wife. It's such a nice car with globs of power and handling - bigger than the M3 for sure but nearly just as fun to drive. I think my wife will really love driving it and I get to go back to my M3, so both are satisfied.

I did the switch from C63 to E63 due to exact same concerns and my wife still wasn't happy so be careful doing it for that purpose!

That being said, the switch from E63 to M5 F90 has been a revelation for my wife, she loves it.

I'm in my 40's and not quite willing to throw the towel in quite yet but the M5 does offer a good balance. Is it as engaging and fun a drive as my C63 or even the E63? No, but it's got a great balance and I have 2 kids and it ticks more boxes.

I've realised that I need a separate car for the 'driving' bit and hope I'll get a 911 at some point to scratch that itch, but as an all rounder, I don't think there is a better car than the M5 and I tested the E63 and RS6 extensively before getting the M5.

I couldn't do it. I just kept both. Yeah, the M3 is great fun at the track, but as I've gotten older, for everyday driving, it seemed to get a little smaller, a little louder, a little harsher. I need to part ways with it sooner or later, but it will be hard.

Lol what? It's called being considerate or maybe even practical. Some people want (or need in certain cases) their significant other to be onboard with their 100k+ purchase and to be comfortable.

One reason I bought the F90 was consideration for my wife, who did not like riding in or driving my E90 M3. I could have bought a new M3 but wanted a bigger and faster and more comfortable car and was willing to trade some road feel.

We have a 21 Cayenne S for my wife and I really like it but would prefer to drive the F90. She compromised on the Cayenne S — she was happy with the base model and I wanted the GTS or Turbo. But sometimes I have to drive it or we go somewhere together in it and I drive and I wanted a little more power. She thought the GTS sounded like a truck, and it is loud particularly on cold start.

Traded in my 18 M3C for a 21 M5C back in May and couldn’t be happier.

The M3 was definitely more sporty to drive and had a much more raw driving experience and it felt like a chained beast ALL of the time. I feel the F8X downsides were: cheap looking interior (except competition seats) with a lot of cheap black plastic trim, more road noise and somewhat harsh ride, and the sound from the exhaust sounds awful especially from the outside.

The M5 on the other hand is definitely not as sporty to drive but the power from the V8 is otherworldly. The engine pulls like a freight train at all speeds and delivers mind warping acceleration and torque. For a big car it handles really well but you definitely notice the weight. But because of this, the car has a dual nature personality, a rocket ship one moment and an extremely comfortable luxury cruiser the next. The interior build quality is a huge step up from the F8X with every surface looking and feeling expensive. And the sound from the exhaust is a definite win over the F8X with that wonderful V8 rumble.

I miss my M3 but I’m definitely over the moon with my M5 and don’t regret the switch for a minute.

Went from a 2018 F80 ZCP to a 2019 F90 Comp, and I have zero regrets. They're very different cars. The F80 is very tossable and a bit more visceral. The F90 is confident in every condition, and the V8 is responsive and eager in every setting. I had a JB4 and DPs on the F80, and it was an absolute pig in comfort. Wildly different car in Sport+ once the tune kicked in. The S63 is always ready to roll in any setting, which you expect with a V8. The creature comforts are a nice advantage too. I'd love to have both cars, but if I had to pick one, I'd go with the F90 every time at this point. It suits what I use the car for better than the F80 did. Just my experience.

And as was mentioned above, get the Comp.

I think you'll be happy with it. The wife and I drove to the BMW Performance Center in my new G82 M4, and we did the new owner (because of her F22) half day thing there, where we drove the X5 on the off-road course, and the M440i, F80 M4, F87 M2C and F90 M5. She loved the M5, and said something like "you should buy one of these". Partly due to the fact that she hates the seats in the M4, which as far as I'm concerned, are no different than the ones in her M240ix as far as comfort goes. I think she just didn't adjust it right, but that's a topic for elsewhere.

If I had the spare coin, I'd get an M5 and keep the M4, but I really can't justify that kind of money, not right now with my relatively short commute and we just don't travel by car much any more (even less so with the Covid).

But if I had to move on from the M4, or had to buy an automatic, the M5 would be it.

That said, if it's not too late, you should really take a look at the new M3 - the ride quality is surprisingly good, dare I say, maybe a smidgen better than the M5? It will have a bit more road noise though, and they are hard to find right now, but it's worth considering.

Hey everyone, Thanks for the input! I go in this Saturday to complete the trade, I'm going to ask for the keys and an hour drive.

Probably the hardest decision I've made in a long time.

I had an E36M3 (3 years and about 40,000 miles) then E46M3 (10 years and about 100,000 miles) then a supercharged E90M3 (another 10 years and about 100,000 miles) and I just bought a 2019 F90C. I wanted to get a larger car because my kids are now 11 and 14 and I needed more rear seat room and a larger trunk. I had never been in an F90 or driven one before mine arrived but my brother has a G30 540i that I had driven. Now that I have had the F90 for 2 months, I can't say enough good things about it. My M3 was certainly fast with the supercharged V8 but it is nothing compared to the F90. With the F90 the turbos quickly spool up and it just takes off. My friend who daily drives a 991 911 Turbo drove it and said, "This much car should not accelerate like that." I was a little worried that the Competition package would be too harsh in NYC but the M5 rides better than my stock suspension E90M3 ever did. The M5 is quieter than the E90 because I had an aftermarket exhaust and overall the M3 sounded better but now that I am getting old, I don't mind the quiet. The comforts of the F90 are leaps and bounds better than the M3 and I love the massaging seats and the radar cruise control. There is no question that the steering feel is not as good and my only real complaint about the M5 so far is that the steering wheel itself is just a bit too thick on long drives. The E90 steering wheel was perfect in size. We only have one car so my wife drives the M5 all the time and she likes it better too. Overall I can understand why a non-car person would never understand why an F90 costs $40,000 more than a G30 that is so similar (especially on the inside) but I have always been a car person and it is totally worth it and an amazing daily driver/family car.

Nope. M5 is a land yatch compared to the M3 and I prefer more nimble cars over heavy and luxurious ones. If the SO complains about it, I kindly ask her to take her Corolla instead. I configure my car to my liking and not to someone else's.

I went from a 2015 M4 to a 2019 M5. The wife still doesn't like driving nor riding in the M5. Get the car that works best for you. If you add up the miles at the end of ownership you will find that the majority are solo driving. I love my machine and will be hanging on to it for several more years.

Good decision on the extended test drive. I did the same and never looked back after that.
