Coolant change

Followed this diy using that blue bleeder screw:

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=995387

Only drained 4L according to how much I refilled with, and I knew it was not a lot just from looking at it. Wtf?? Was expecting around 8L, I know I'm gonna be leaving a small amount of old coolant but still, only 4L drained/refilled? Yes, the car was level, took about 15 min to drain but was just trickling

was the coolant level full before you drained it? there is approx 7-8L as far as i know..

was the coolant dirty? at what mileage did you do the flush

i suspect there is still old coolant left in there. have you checked to make sure its clean now?

cheers

Yea coolant was full before, never had a low coolant light etc. It's at 86k with original.

No old coolant wasn't too bad, just used. Well it's pretty clean and flushed now lol, I did the bleed process with the bleeder screw off and I swear it puked out the entire system, I put in about 4L more, finally closed the bleeder screw on the last liter and the red gauge popped right back up, started up and smokes like crazy burning up the spilled mix. Lotta coolant on the floor, but kinda upset because I put some water wetter in there and I think I should re add some

Like 3-4 years or 100k, maybe less. A lot of people do it every 2 years also I think

So guys did I fuck up somewhere, am I supposed to have a huge amount of coolant come back up from the bleed process?

Just drop the fluid in the radiator every so many miles or years and call it good.
I wouldn't over think it.

If you think you're behind up your intervals.

If I am reading this right and you only put in 4L, there is a heap of air bubbles in the system. Massage the hoses and keep topping up

The whole system holds a little more than 8 liters. If you just drain the radiator, you should get roughly 5 liters out.

Drain the radiator, remove the reservoir cap and the bleed screw and slowly fill the tank. When the system is nearly full, coolant will start to come out of the bleed screw. When the stream coming out of the bleed screw is free of air bubbles, replace the bleed screw. Then top off the tank and run the electric bleed process.

The cap and bleed screw need to be closed when you bleed it. If you have the cap off it won't bleed correctly.

Yeah capacities don't lie....and there are inconsistencies across car mfgs about when to change the long life stuff. But one car co. says 100k the first time, and 50k every time after that. So imho, without overthinking it, every 50k or 4 yrs. wouldn't hurt. I mean even BMW coolant is $26/gal. Toyota's is double that. It seems that with the majority of drivers not caring, the mfgs. have every so slightly increased intervals or become vague, esp. when there's free maint.

The car does too! That's why it's bordering on cruel to undo the bleeder with the cap still off....
