Is anyone else having this issue? When we were in France a few weeks ago, Apple CarPlay would disconnect the phone at toll booths. Every single one. And today, in my wife’s 1 Series, we went through a large tunnel, with loads of cameras, and the iPhone disconnected from her car as well, taking about 15 minutes to reconnect.

How strange! Was your CarPlay connected via wireless or plugged in?

Could this be a new navigation feature for “safety” reasons that happened via software update? Has not happened to me yet.

It’s connected wirelessly. Weird that it happens on two different models of bmw.

I hope not. It’s actually unsafe, as you’re trying to reconnect frantically so you can get the map back up, before you miss your next turn.

Odd for sure. Is it possible your car is somehow connecting automatically to a wifi signal put out by the toll booths or something ? Or is something connecting to your phones hotspot?

If i'm not mistaken , when I tried to connect a laptop to my iPhone hotspot used for CarPlay , it would not allow me to have the computer connected to the phone im using for CarPlay.

I could be wrong, I dont fully recall, but it would make me disconnect carplay to use the phone hotspot. Something like that.

It should be. I’ve emailed the dealer, they’ve not heard about this issue before, but said they’d mention it to bmw.

I've experienced the same issue. My CarPlay connection disconnects while paying at French tolls. Strangely, it doesn't happen every time. During a recent trip with a friend in France, we had the same problem while using an Audi.

Yep 100%. I use wireless Android Auto and it disconnects at each toll booth on our way down in the summer. Reconnects quickly after though, and Waze will restart, so I've just got used to it.

I’m glad it’s not just me then. Just need to work out how to get around this issue.

If you use wired CarPlay, I guarantee you wouldn’t have an issue. Certain wireless signals (namely some 5G towers) interfere with wireless CarPlay. Happens all the time as I pass too close to certain 5G towers in my area.

I’m sure the tollbooth in question is using a certain band of the spectrum for something or another that is interfering with CarPlay.

I get a disconnect/interruption on my Apple Carplay at specific a intersection consistently. It has to be RF interference. Not sure what is emitting or at what strength; not sure I want to know....
