2023 vs 2021
Got two kids now so my F82 is no longer a feasible car so looking to upgrade to a F90 M5.
Looking at two options right now: 2023 3k miles at 120k 2021 15k miles at 93k Both have similar optioning (Exec, DAP, Comp) except the 2023 has a M drivers, 2k color and 1k trim upgrades. Which one would you pick? Why? How much are you asking them to discount it? |

There's not enough to go on for us to answer which one. Mechanically, they are identical. The main differences between 21 and 23 being the colors that were offered at the time. The only recommendation I can see anyone making is the 23 because there will be 2 additional calendar years of warranty vs. the 21 which is already half way thru the warranty period.
But other than that - it's really up to you - are you comfortable paying 30k more for a 2 year newer car with a few more options. You really can't go wrong with either.

Agree with MackSea70 on all fronts, including that we’re missing some necessary info here.
My general, very broad advice is to always go with the newest car one can afford when comparing nearly identical examples. If the older example had options that you wanted that the newer one did not, then I wouldn’t necessarily say this. But it seems that in this case, to you, they are functionally the same in that regard.

Didn't the 2023 fix the brake squealing? My 2021 brakes are loud as shit.

How many miles have you put on it so far? The steel brakes usually start squealing like a school bus after 5-10k

As a previous non-CCB pre-LCI owner, I had the school bus brake squeal like everyone else. It started before I hit 1K on the clock on that car and persisted all the way through ~29K when I traded it. Before acquiring my LCI, I had been reading on the forum that a lot of owners with ‘22s had significantly less squealing (supposedly due to new/different pads, though I have no proof of this) and I had high hopes that I would be one of those as well.
On my ‘22 (also no CCBs), I noticed that my squealing was about 95% better. It took very specific conditions and braking patterns to get them to squeal. Because of my previous experience, I was/am always listening to see if break squeal will increase. A few weeks ago, while driving, I started hearing brake squeal under more normal conditions, so I snapped this photo to mark exactly when it started for the purposes of sharing with this forum when the discussion arose again. The more pronounced squeal started at exactly 6,246 miles for me. It’s still about 85% better than my previous car, but light pressure, low speed braking that requires you to “hold” the brakes (like crawling through city traffic) will elicit a squeal, and it’s not as quiet as it was initially, but still significantly quieter than my pre-LCI. Since it got to that level a couple of weeks ago, it’s held pretty consistently. I am really hoping it holds like this and doesn’t continue to get worse. I am now at exactly 6,972 miles. LASpartan — I think you don’t have the newer pads. windtendo — Have you had the squeal on your new car yet? Your mileage must still be very, very low. RalphT5 — Are you 100% silent still or “mostly” silent? Sorry to the detail freaks about my filthy dash. It’s not as dirty as it looks, the iPhone camera is just really good. And my apologies OP, I did not mean to threadjack you.

I have over 7K miles and my breaks are silent. BMW must have changed something with the break pads. I would be interested to see someone with a MY22 or older get some new OEM pads to see if they get any noise. |

I believe that I have the newer pads, they’re just not entirely silent — much, much better, but definitely not completely silent. I’m due for an oil change in 1000 or so miles and will ask my SA about it.

I have a long standing relationship with my dealer from purchasing numerous other vehicles from other marques they sell. On my pre-LCI, I took the car into the dealership twice for the squeal. To assuage me, they performed a “complete brake lubrication service” (regularly $640) for free twice. Both times the SM told me they would perform it as a courtesy, but within two weeks at most, the same noise would arise. And of course it did. Each time I was given the whole “this is normal.”

I’ve got a 2021 steel brakes but honestly squealing isn’t that bad at all. I really only notice it when they’re wet for the most part. The dust though is horrendous. Going to switch to Isweep for that alone

I'm only at ~500ish miles right now, but I have CCBs. Still interested in hearing if they've made some changes on the 2023 steel brakes.

I found a couple great lines in the G80 Technical Training Docs:
"Point out that the customer can use his/her braking technique to help prevent the noises occurring or ensure they quickly disappear again. For example, after washing the vehicle it is important to dry the brakes out by braking (braking a few times from 31 mph to 0 is sufficient). Or that the brakes can have a tendency to squeak if they go through long periods when they are only exposed to light braking, which is why braking hard a few times can help out (= higher brake temperature)." "The brake dust tells the customer that his/her BMW M vehicle has been driven in an appropriate manner" The Germans have a sense of humor. And if you listen to the M5 LCI videos at the top of this forum the BMW narrator says "with the optional autobahn suicide...no wait they call it M driver's package now". |

The brake lubrication service resolving the squeal was very short lived. I don’t have that M5 any more, so I believe I destroyed the service records for it, but I will look and see if I can find it so you have something to go on with your dealer.
