Got to use Apple Carplay today
It is awesome! I believe BMW is the first to use wireless CarPlay. I strongly suggest plugging the phone in or getting a case and using the wireless charger. CarPlay uses WIFI and BT and that can drain your battery quickly.
Since CarPlay has a fix aspect ratio there is space to use the split screen. |

Envious is me, I have the useless BMW nav that is difficult to use and has many many proprietary apps that are stupid and equally useless. But hey the screen is neat looking with a cool map!

I do wish I had CarPlay, but not for navigation purposes

My first BMW a MY17 440i Gran Coupe in production right now with CarPlay as an option! This just made me excited!

Adding entries can be a hassle, but that's why you use the Connected or Remote apps to send addresses to the car; I've done this since 2012. Now, since I'm an Apple guy, I'd love to have CarPlay, but I prefer google Maps or Waze to Apple Nav anyway. If they ever put Waze into the dash, I'll just lose it and have to have it.

Is it touch screen? I know the 7 series uses gestures, wondering if that's how CarPlay was implemented.

This would be of no use to me at all - I'd rather not have the distractions, plus I'll never own anything made by Apple. Not really interested in Android Auto, either. There are some things I can do completely without while driving.

Not a fan of Carplay if it forces you with Apple Maps. I'm interested in Android Auto but I feel like these techs are not there yet.

Only reason I want CarPlay is for messaging. Even with Office on the BMW nav the messaging sucks. Although I have an Apple Watch so I don't really need it on my car screen. But it would be cool.

I can't believe they want to charge $300 for Carplay compatibility on top of the $1950 required Navigation.
Which other manufacturers are charging for this?

I was in South Dakota last week touring Mt. Rushmore and the national parks. I used my iPhone with Siri and Apple Maps for navigation. While it worked well in town, cell phone service was not always available, which prevented the system from working in isolated areas. The built-in GPS using satellite navigation is more reliable. That being said, I would have liked to have Apple CarPlay.

As an Apple user I would say Apple Maps have gotten better. Are they Google Maps good? No. However, integrating our systems (phone and nav) will be awesome. I'm ordering a 2017 328d SW and have checked e box for CarPlay so I look forward to it as well.

With both my recent BMWs I have done almost all address entries through the remote app. When it comes to music it's quicker for me to manage Spotify on my Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. I have yet to be convinced Carplay or Android Car would bring me improvements on top of iDrive. However I tend to prefer the navigation routes suggested by Google over BMW. |
