what does the auto button do?
quick question, the auto button on the e90 climate control changes the fan speed, but does it also automatically change which vents the air comes out of, or is that still manual?

Ejection seat. Automatically ejects ugly chicks out the sunroof.
Actually, it seems to balance the airflow between all three vent locations.

Subbed for the rare occasion that someone replies with actual knowledge of the system not just an opinion.

Took a couple minutes to find it in the PDF manual, offered online via BMW

"Auto" mode basically stands for "automatic fan speed and stratification control". The temperature is set manually and AC is enabled/disabled manually. Yes, of course it controls the vents as well. I don't know why you'd assume it was "still manual", since any attempt to switch the vents manually immediately disables "auto" mode. The reverse is also true: if you manually turn off all manual vent control settings (by pressing each activated vent button again), "auto" mode will activate by itself. It just means that the A/C is on. The A/C not only provides provisions for cooling the incoming air, but it also dehumidifies it. This makes the cabin more pleasant and it keeps the windows from frosting/fogging up.

In fact, some might claim that the primary purpose of AC unit is dehumidification. Historucally, the compressor-based AC unit were originally invented specifically to perfrom dehumidification. The cooling was just a side-effect of the process. |

That is why it is called Air Conditioning and the previous post is wrong, when your turn on the automatic function it also turns on the AC function at the same time.

Firstly, you can manually disable the AC afterwards. The "Auto" mode will stay engaged, but AC will be disabled. It will not enable by itself. Secondly, you don't have to press "Auto" button to engage "Auto" mode. You can simply hit each of the three vent buttons that have green light on it. Once all vent lights are off, the CC will automatically enter "Auto" mode. However, the AC does not enable itself when you enter "Auto" mode through this path. The bottom line here is very simple: enabling/disabling AC in E9x always requires a manual button hit. It could be different buttons, but a manual button hit is always required. |

I dunno, I'm strange as I've never used it before.
I guess I'm a control freak. Explains why I bought a manual also.

I've never used it, never even considered it. I figured if it's half as good as the automatic wipers, it would turn my cabin into a menopause simulator.

Let's me quote again what I said in my previous post Quote:

How is your post supposed to refute mine? And if it isn't, then why are you accompanying your posts with "this is completely false" remarks directed at my posts? If you want to prove me wrong you will have to show how to enable/disable AC without hitting any buttons. Any buttons. Do you know how to do that? If not, then I can only repeat what I said above: enabling/disabling AC in E9x always requires a manual action - a button hit. |

Auto a/c can be coded to NOT turn on by default. Thus hitting "Auto" only turns the fans and vents on.
I couldn't stand having to manually shut off the a/c just because I wanted auto climate |

Ok so setting it to auto will adjust the fan speed and which vents are being used, but if your not using auto and you don't click on any of the three zones, how does it decide which vents the air comes out of?
