This looks to be very beastly.
Like the idea of a "switchable" AWD function, if you can truly go 100% of all available power to RWD only, if that's what you want at the time. If this is to be the approach of the addition of AWD to the M-cars, I would imagine it's about the best way they could have done it.

ZF8
Guys I have the 8 speed in my 2016 X5M and I have no problems with it at all. I also had the DCT in my F80 M3 and BMW did a great job with the ZF8. The only difference in the clutches is the DCT would shift immediately to the lowest gear possible harshly when using the paddles, or stomping on it, whereas the 8 speed doesn't do that but still shifts faster than you can do it. If you stomp on the gas in 7th gear it will throw you into 4th gear in an instant, what a blast. The settings (m buttons) really work great with 8 speed. I'm sure BMW will tune the 8 speed even more with the new M5.

Why, it's available on the fly with the flick of a switch or mode. Nothing like this has been done before in this type of car. This really expands on the versatility that is the M5.

I kept saying, people will complain now but by this time next year, they will say it's the greatest M5 ever.

Most likely, yeah, time and cost... They can just simply reuse the same slushbox from the X5 M.
I had a look on ZF's website and their 8-speed DCT is rated up to 1,000 Nm, and it is the transmission used in the new Panamera.

Bro are these not publicity stunts? First the CAD drawings now this...? Got everyone talking.
(But I want to talk about the £1100 quid BMW are charging me for warped discs after 15 months of commuting : ) |

Depreciation is your best friend and I promise you will be able to afford it after a couple years. The F10 M5 has held up very well by comparison to the E60 M5 which was riddled with issues (still one of the best in my opinion though). Just be patient

That's not what I meant. I'm just surprised that people are surprised about the ZF when all the news and interviews have been saying the same thing for a couple of months now.

And you already know that BMW AG will not ok the M Division to develop a 3 liter Twin Turbo V10 that makes 600 hp, and revs to 8k. And then said engine has to be reliable? Pipe dreams. Over-stressed engines tend not to be reliable. BMW has said before that they are transitioning into a tech and mobility company. Soon, all the things that make your heart race will be gone. |
