They top out in mid 90s, less than $10k than a base M5. Someone who's a badge whore could get a new M5 for slightly more than an M550i if options are not important.

Ultimately, any comments that this is what happens in "NJ" is offensive and trite. Would love to know where FatRear08 is from…

The problem is that everyone should be happy and HONEST with what they have. If you like the 550i better or it's only what you could afford, that's fine. But wear it proudly and don't try to show that your driving something it isn't. In fact, the guy I was griping about could have shown how cool a 550i could be with the black out treatment etc that he has on the car. Love and own what you have. Don't be a poser.

Say what you want, but the badge snobs on this thread don’t come across to me as being concerned about honesty and contentment. They come across to me as being tremendously concerned about the perceived value of their car.

so funny thing i came from a 2015 Audi S8 and before that S6 and on and on. This summer at a family picnic a bunch of what i call jealous want to be in laws commented on me stepping down to a 5 series BMW. They hadn't any idea that M5 is a totally different beast. Living in Western Pa. (Pittsburgh Area) i told them to look and if they can find another M5 within a couple hundred miles they would be lucky. It is a car that people that know cars understand others think it is a normal BMW.

There's something wrong with your character if you mis-badge your car to fool people into believing you bought a more expensive car than you did.

As stated earlier, if this person found his/her way into my professional or personal life, I'd be actively looking to disassociate or minimize the depth of the relationship. Dishonest people suck.

While I'm generally indifferent to people like this, I don't think there's anything wrong with being irritated by bad behavior even if it's by randoms, especially when it occurs within the realm of one's hobby or passion.

What I find more annoying is seeing the M slip on plastic colors on so many grills on all types of BMWs. I think it looks dumb especially on non M cars.
