How's reliability been? Looking to buy a 18/19 M5 soon

As title says, I’m wanting to get an M5 soon and wondering how reliability has been for you guys?

I know the coolant tank is a massive issue and I’ve heard about the low pressure pump. Is there anything else major that has gone wrong? What’s the reliability tuned vs stick? Some people say that the S63 is pretty solid as long as you maintain it.

Also, how’s the fuel consumption on these on long motorway drives? I know they’re not meant to be efficient but I’ve always wondered how the V8’s perform on longer relaxed drives.

I’ll be coming from a Stage 2 G30 540i with the B58. Which has been solid for me. Never had an issue. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi,

My car has about 43,000 miles and the only problem encountered so far has been the coolant reservoir leaking (keeping my fingers crossed).
You seem to have understood that this problem was recurrent on the M5s.

Regarding autonomy, driving at around 75 MPH on the highway, I arrive at a really reasonable consumption for a V8, something like 28 MPG.

As with any engine, maintenance counts for a lot as you've said. I do not respect the intervals provided by BMW.
I have engine oil changes done approximately every 6,000 miles.

I forgot to mention, my car is a 2018 and it's 100% stock.

Wow - I change my oil every 5 to 6,000 KM. - not miles.
Especially if you do short drives, I had an AMG c63 fail due to short drive and not having the engine burn off vapour. So now very proactive. An oil change is so cheap.

Ever wonder why water comes out the tail pipes.

Maybe that is why the F90 M5 run pretty high oil temps — burn off the condensation. I do 5000 mile changes and have very few short drives where the engine either oil either does not get up to operating or gets there but does not stay there for at least a few minutes.

I am at 52k miles on my 2018. I have done all the maintenance plus some. Just changed transmission fluid, which is lifetime. Also have done differentials, transfer case, brake fluid, replaced about half the engine coolant (lost some changing the thermostat to a 90C and lost a little changing the expansion tank), replaced some of the intercooler coolant while swapping in CSF coolers, changed plugs and coils, and changed air filters. No problems yet. Stage 2 tuned, with WMI.

I'm only using my car for long drives such as 200km as a minimum and could go until 1.200km in a day.

Changing oil every 10.000km is fine for me (for you information, BMW recommends an oil change every 30.000km...)

If you tune, a B58 540i definitely will be more reliable and less expensive on consumables. If you keep it stock, other than the coolant reservoir the M5 F90 is known to be bullet proof
