this soft paint is ridiculous
I had my M5C ceramic coated right after delivery although I didn't want to spring for PPF on a lease...
The car is covered in chips and scratches from road debris after 6 months or so, I've never seen anything like it. My girlfriends $40K VW doesn't have a scratch on it! I feel like opening a complaint with BMWUSA. The quality of the paint is just way below an acceptable standard. I've never had a car, or motorcycle, lose paint like this. It's roughly the quality of Krylon spray paint. It looks beautiful but damn...what good is it if it can't handle even basic use? Is everyone having this issue?

Yes 100%. I have the exact same setup as you ceramic and paint correction done before I picked the car at the dealer. I have always been a good two bucket wash and zero scratches, swirls perfect hand wash almost weekly. I have kept many many cars with great condition paint and this car sucks for paint quality. I have numerous small scratches and the road rash on both sides of the front tires is awful with only 10k mi. Granted the scratches are my OCD coming out and you can't really see them unless you look really close but still. For a car with 130k sticker the paint is crap. The depth isn't even close to my 08 997. I leased as well and if I had purchased would be more than upset.

Ceramic Coating has nothing to do with chip protection. PPF is the only way to help prevent chips and of course is around $3k for decent work and protection.
Are your cars black by any chance? |

exactly.. save your self the trouble of CC.. get PPF and be worry free.. no coating is going to prevent incoming rocks flying at your car no matter how many layers of paint you have.. at the very least, i PPF full front on all my cars the very next day they are acquired..

I sympathize, but want you to be realistic here. You can open a complaint with BMW, but you will need to have your expectations extremely low for them to do anything. Actually, "extremely low expectations" are probably still too high.
BMW isn't going to even address the issue unless you actually have a serious paint issue, so you are going to have to start at your dealership. May the odds be in your favor.

Totally understand ceramic has zero to do with protection. But a paint correction plus ceramic and I am finding slight swirls and scratches tells me the factory paint/clear coat is thin. I lease and have no intent on putting pff on a car I do not own, I equate that to putting money down on a lease you never get the value. My f10 m5, e90 m3 and both E46 m3s never had this issue and none of them had pff either. Hands down the paint on the m5 is garbage for the cost of the car.

could be the paint, could be the way you're washing your car... i'll opt for the latter.
I've been washing my fathers SG m5 for 3 months now, as i haven't had time to wax it myself.. and i literally have zero marring/scratching. So the paint is essentially raw right now. |

I can only speak to the X3 M40i as my M5 hasn't arrived yet. That car is sapphire black and doesn't seem to have these issues, about 4 month in and its near perfect. I plan on going PPF on the M5, the cost is worth not having to worry about it.

Paint correction and PPF ...game over. No scratches, swirls, chips or worries ... easy to maintain and always looks good.
And yes, it's a lease .....

I have numerous chips on the front bumper after normal(ish) NJ driving for 8K miles. DG shows every chip too. That said, it's a lease...I'd care more if I bought it outright but then I also would have sprung for PPF...
I think it's pretty obvious BMWUSA won't do anything but I'm curious to hear what they will say about it anyway. I may reach out next week and if so, I'll post the result.

I got a nasty chip week one. Next week it was in the shop getting PPF. I can't really fix the chip but I'm well protected now after a 2300 investment. Also, anyone doing full front end protection, make sure the installer isn't using computer cut film. The M5 requires custom hand-cut film by someone that knows what they are doing.

Yes, chip on the nose in the first week right by the BMW badge! Can’t get MBB here either so had to search abroad. Got a local chap to do his best and I just ignore it now. That’s why I don’t ‘buy’ expensive cars anymore....

yes. I have 11k miles on my M550i and noticed more and more chips on the front bumper and one even on the hood. Going to order Dr. color chip and start filling them in.

My only concern buying this car was the soft paint. I had issues with my prior BMWs, particularly dark colored ones, just swirling and scuffing like crazy. I have 850 miles on my M5 and already have two chip/scratches on it. Pretty crazy, but I knew going in that I'd have to accept that the paint is gonna look like crap over time. BMW paint looks great, but you just breathe on it and it marks.

As others have said ceramic coating will not stop nicks and scratches. Ppf will.
That said my bluestone is already chipped up. When it gets bad enough I’ll have it resprayed with axaulta products and I’ll be good to go. Most factory paint is fair at best. Bmw paint looks nice wears like poo. I complained to my dealer who said it was caused by driving debris ridden roads, tailgating or spinning my wheels. Nothing is their fault. |
