Own the F90 M5 Comp and drove the M8GC, the M5 is the nicer drive in my opinion, the M8 feel huge whether it's seat position or what but you can't place it on the road the same as the M5.

I will say what I have for a while, because if we're talking about looks, I believe the M8GC looks better then the M5. Not too subtle, yet elegant all at once. The issue is what many have been saying, and that's the price premium over what is essentially the same cars. If you want a coupe, then the M8 is fine, but if you want 4 doors, I personally can't say that the M8GC is a better value then an M5.

That being said, if money isn't an issue, and you want what is considered the best the brand has to offer, then there is nothing wrong purchasing an M8GC. More power to you, because no matter what car you end up getting, there is no denying that you'll end up with one heck of a car.

If the 8er was a $5k difference like the "X coupes" (which is a whole other rant I could go on) I could see it, but $25k, nope, I'd buy a Miata or a nice vacation with that.

I got 4-doors only for the dog since we didn't have an SUV then.
I mean hey, everyone values cash differently, depending on how much you have and how badly you want something. For me, personally, I can see blowing $5K because "I just like how it looks better." But the truth is, if I were crazy filthy rich, its possible that $25K for the less logical, but cooler choice could be worth it. I'm not trying to say anyone who drives a 4-door coupe is an idiot, i'm just saying from my perspective, the $25K price gap seems pretty excessive, since that premium is almost entirely about the way the car looks.
That's my second and best M6 GC, my second and best F90 M5 and my current M8C GC.

You decide; I have.

I still am deeply admiring the M6GC for its balanced design! It's a monumental looking car. Way more elegant and composed than both the M5 or M8.

She was a favorite of mine for sure and there are aspects of that design that win out for me, too.

If you are keeping long time like 8-10 years and you are the type that how the car looks matters to you a lot, I would go for the m8 if money is not an object. M5 already looks dated and would look more so compared to m8 in a few years time. Moreover there would be many secondhand m5s on the road in few years time compared to the exclusivity of m8 if keeping long term

The interior of m5 is just slightly upgraded 5 series interior whilst m8 interior is somewhat more exclusive

Anyway not being biased because I own one, M6 with two tone colour still has the best interior IMO

Not trying to rekindle the debate here ..... I'm in a similar situation weather to get a m5comp 130k car or a 156k m8 comp convertible payment difference is only a 130 more month on the m8 comp conv vs a 2021 m5 comp . I do not need 4 doors as a must have.

On a side note - I just unloaded a 2020 m8 conv it was a non comp had it only for 5 months was thinking to jump on a 992 lease which is just plain ridiculous . Already having buyers remorse about m8 gone .

I want the better performing car, and based on the lower weight and shorter wheelbase it looks like that might be the M5? I had three M5’s before my M6, and I feel like the M6GC CP felt sportier than my F10 M5. But, I’m not sure that will be the case with the current comparison.

I’ve driven the M5 CP and the M850i, and I’m looking to find an M8 GC to test. But, in the meantime, has anyone already gone through this process?

Thank you
I wasn't looking at the M8 GC as it was a bit more than what I wanted to spend. However I did cross shop the M5 with the M850i GC. It might not be the best comparison as it's an M vs a non M car in terms of performance but here were the other features I took note of to make my decision.

I will say that the M850i GC is nice looking car and definitely a head turner. I do like how the infotainment screen is embedded on the dash and looks much more flowing with the overall dash design. The fact that Laser Light was available on the 8 series was another plus. Another feature was the small storage compartment in the rear center armrest, not sure why the G30 5 series no longer has that as my F10 had that compartment (My 5 year old likes to bring a small toy with him and it offered a place for him to put that in there, probably not much use for most people). The power rear side sunshades were definitely a nice gimmick as well as the pano moonroof.

In comparison, I loved the 20 way multi-contour seats in the M5 which isn't offered in the M850 GC or M8 GC for that matter. The M8 CG seems to use the same seats found on the X3 M. The digital AC controls on the M5 was more visually appealing compared with the 8 GC's AC controls, which now seems to be a design language that spans across the other series. The 4 zone climate control on the M5 includes the B pillar vents which allows for more air flow for rear passengers which the 8 GC doesn't offer in their version of 4 zone. I also prefer the framed doors on the M5 as it seems to insulate better but I have nothing to back that up; just my observation when driving both cars. I find the overall driving visibility better with the M5 compared with the 8 GC's sloping design and the former seems more agile as you can feel the latter's width when maneuvering around city streets here in LA.

In the end, I chose the M5 since for a similar price, depending on how you configure each vehicle, I got a true M car. Again, this was in comparison with the M850 GC. The M8 as I said was a bit too much for me to justify that jump. The M5's overall design seems more coherent and I prefer the subtle look of it. While the 8 GC is a head turner, I find it looks a bit odd in certain angles but my opinion extends to all 4 door coupes for this matter. I actually test drove the M5 and the M850 GC on 3 separate occasions across 3 different dealerships. Each time, I find the M5 calling my name and that sealed the deal for me.

I've owned and tracked both of them—F90 M5C twice (as in a MY '19 and then a '20) for a combined 50,000 miles I'd guess—I prefer the M8C GC... which I've driven for 20,000.

I’m still contemplating moving from my M6GC. It’s a tough choice though because I love the car so much, Tanzanite/Amaro, Comp pk, Dinan 700HP. I live in the NE and would be nice to have 4WD. I drove the M5CP and 850M, and the 8 seemed like less of a drivers car mainly because of the driving position, size and visibility. Limeypride, what can you define in the M8 from a driving perspective that you prefer over the M5?

Don't take this question the wrong way, but if you love the M6 so much, why not keep it? I read comments in forums often saying I wish I would have kept this car or that car or blah blah blah. So you not just keep the M6 and continue your love affair?

The thought of a new experience is exciting plus 4WD as we prepare for another snowstorm tomorrow, but the question you asked is a valid one. The only car I ever regret selling is my 850CSI, ironically I traded it in on my first(E39) of three M5s.

Nothing—that's not what makes it better. Keep in mind I drive the GC so they're incredibly similar mechanically. What's better to me is that the car now looks as good as it drives—better than it drives, in fact, as I continue my abuse of "better" in what is rapidly becoming a run-on sentence... I digress.

If I wanted another sleeper, I'd have gone for the LCI M5 or perhaps given the new and improved E63S another chance to wow me... but I didn't want a sleeper this time. I test drove the new RS7 a month or so ago and having driven it for 45 mins or so, I got back in my M8, pulled away and within 10 seconds unintentionally and loudly blurted out, "awww, hell no!"—it didn't even come close.

I love my M8 from the moment I open the back door to the garage—literally, the moment I see it, I'm excited to get in it again. The interior is also better—the shifter being a huge step up to name but one thing. The doors, the rear cabin and some of the materials are all upgraded relative to the M5 cabin (arguably, though, not enough differentiation but I'm over that).

So far at least, the endless (and close to daily) stream of enthusiastic thumbs ups at traffic lights or kids with mouths agape as I drive past hasn't gotten old—I'm sure other M8 drivers see the same thing. Just last night, we did a cocktail crawl with 12 or so couples in the new neighborhood I recently moved into—when I was introduced to the ever growing group, perhaps 75% of the time, the intro was suffixed or acknowledged with "he's/you're the guy with that beautiful satin BMW". You know what, I kinda enjoy that it turns out.

Net net: this car makes the whole driving experience feel that much more special and it begins before you're even inside it.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, it’s essentially the value I saw when I moved from my F10 M5 to the M6GC(both comp pk), although I do feel like the M6 felt like a somewhat better overall driving experience as well, albeit minor.

Likewise with the F10 and M6. I had 3 F10 M5s and then test drove an M6 GC and was instantly sold—I racked up the miles on it as always and went and got another M6 GC.

The situation with the F90 M5 and M8 is identical for me—all the pros of the M5 wrapped in a wayyyyy prettier package.

Let us know what you decide...

How do you find the frozen paint holds up with daily use? I think it’s a great look for the M8 but I would be concern about nicks from everyday use, likewise I’m not sure if PPF to protect it would hold up with years of everyday use as well.

I love the look but I wouldn't get factory frozen again given that 1) PPF is basically a MUST HAVE so if you're going to do that, you might as well get a similar gloss finish (in my case, say Donington Gray would be close) and then 2) matte wrap that achieving the frozen effect and PPF in one fell swoop... and for less money.
