F90 comp - to tune or not to tune? Options with warranty

Hi guys! New to this forum but coming from F80 platform. I just got F90 M5 comp brand new, after I had F80 M3 for 2 years, car was BM3 stage 2 tuned with around 10 track days on the clock, until shit started breaking. Not spun crank hub luckily but snapping axles, replaced driveshaft, clutch, flywheel and other stuff = $10K+ in repairs out of pocket because car was flagged and all warranty repairs denied. So I got tired of the situation and also the potential CH failure was stuck in my head, so I pulled the trigger and got a new car.

In stock form it’s as fast as my F80 was on stage 2, which was pushing 500+ WHP.
But since tuning is a decease running in our blood, I’m researching potential tuning options for this car. Are there any options that come WITH warranty? For some reason DINAN has nothing for this car and it seems like AC schnitzer piggyback is the only option with warranty at the moment?

Now, just to clarify, i’m only gonna tune with something that comes together with decent warranty after my experience with bootmod and F80 platform.

From what I understand, this is from one of the former engineers that was part of the Alpina group, Karl-Otto Noelle.

There is another thread posted on the forum with more information and a video review.

There is uncertainty around their power claims as there hasn't been any dyno or track times posted.

I'm tuned with Mike at BPM Sport. His service and reputation are 2nd to none. No warranty though.

If you are really worry, no company will be able to give you a full warranty.
Even Dinan do void your factory warranty and replaced with their warranty.
But, when things go bad, Dinan and BMW will put you in the middle until someone willing to settle the bills. I didn't make this up, one of my customer with F85 X5M just faced this issue. So, he insist me to spread the news. He pulled out the tune, and yesterday he pulled out the spring since it droop on driver side. While doing that, we found out that one of the exhaust flap on the Dinan muffler doesn't work.

So, he is just tired dealing with it.

Not trying to scare anyone of bad mouthing Dinan. But it started to happen more often lately.

Both tune and piggy can be detected ... if you have $60k laying around go for it.

If you are the least bit concerned, leave your car as-is and save yourself the headache.

I'm in a similar situation. Bent a rod on the F10 so I really do not want to deal with that expense on my own again if I can help it. I'm currently looking at the racechip module as that has a warranty up to $7,500 that includes oem components based on my quick reading. It's also tuv certified, which tells me that this thing is conservative enough to not really need to stress over it.

I personally can't see a tuning company going through the expense of certification or warranty if they know their tune is aggressive and likely to cause damage. Doesn't make sense. I'm still on the fence though as $$$ was steep on my F10 experience.

piggyback is your best bet. RC or JB4.

pull out before service or if something breaks. find a local bmw shop that has the right computers to clear faults on the back end prior to bringing in to BMW.

dont over boost and you're golden( im generalizing)

if its a real concern keep it as is.

you pay to play. enjoy while you can play before bmw starts their over the air diagnostics in the near future and tunes are detectable OTA.

they will not pay out easy. end of story.

the added expense of towing to a bmw shop to remove piggy and or clear codes prior to service is the best bet/cheapest option in terms of the "what if" scenario.

worked for me with a blown turbo with 2700 miles on the clock.

and i got bmw NA to pay 1 month of my payment

So, isn’t the piggyback detectable? Or they are just checking if the ECU was tampered, i.e. flash tuned? I actually started with JB stage 1 on my F80 and everything was fine until I went stage 2 bootmod with more aggressive tune, that’s when shit started breakinc. And of course they detected it and voided warranty. Question remains unanswered whether it would be the same scenario, if I would just kept the piggy without tampering/flashing ECU.

Piggy is not physically detectable but the data recorded on the ECU can be analyzed for variations versus factory parameters ( psi, A/F ratio etc.) and it is sufficient reason for BMW to void warranty even if solely based on data inference.

Many schools of thought on what is safer regarding piggys and tunes ... do a search on this forum or on the F10 M5 forum.

I will say I've never seen a blown engine from a piggy (ran on 2 F10 M5's) but have seen many blown engines (firsthand) from tunes.

Will let you make your own conclusion.

Carbahnautoworks just released their warrantied stage 1 tune. Saw it on the gram. This could be another option.

Happy Hollidays good sir!

Car should be here within the week or so. Turned in the F10 over the weekend. Went individual and got carried away. Already have full suspension in the garage and an open invoice with IND for the aesthetics. Should hopefully be a good build.

After the F10 I'm looking for anything positive lol. Lessons learned is warranty only tunes. 👍

Hahaha .. I was not expecting anything else! I hear you on the warranty ... I've still not done tune or piggy although more than likely will add piggy at some point.
