Was tempted to give this a go, if I could have done it via Bimmercode, but alas im NBTevo_R, so not possible.

For me, its not worth the hassle updating the version just to get full screen carplay.

You don't need to update to a later version, you just need an enet cable and windows PC - takes 5 minutes.

You can flash an ID4 unit to ID5, however, the ID4 units only have 2gb of ram, compared to 4gb on ID5 units.

Only 1 version of fimware works - 18-03 - but even then it is not an ideal solution, I would never reccomend this to anyone as it will not be reliable.

If you want carplay and you have ID4, then just replace the headunit with an ID5 unit and have it flashed to 18-03 (NBTEvo_N)firmware to allow it to work with your existing screen (if you flash to later firmware then you will get random black screens), once flashed and coded/activated to your VIN it is plug and play)

That is a much better solution and won't crap itself on a regular basis.

Appreciate what you are saying, but that does become a very expensive way for just getting Carpaly

buy cheap, buy twice as the saying goes...

Your car, your decision Amigo, but I've got 10+ years of experience coding BMW's and I know the pitfalls.

No matter which way you go, you'll either have to flash your current headunit or flash an ID5 unit to the right firmware to make it work right.

Anyone selling you a service to flash your ID4 unit to ID5 and not telling you it will not randomly reboot because the OS has crashed, is lying.

I'm not trying to make any money out of you, so hopefully you can be re-assured that I have no skin in the game.

You may need to go into manage Bluetooth device, select your device and then click on Apple CarPlay rather than BMW (I think those are the options)
I have to do that with mine every once in a while.

It's also good practice to restart your phone every once in a while as I find this helps CarPlay stability.

Yes, you need to have the firmware updated in order to get Full Screen carplay - can be done with an ENET cable and Windows PC

Thanks Wibbles,

Do I need a charger to keep the battery from going flat too?

Any recommendation for a cable? I can use the wife’s windows laptop I’m sure.

Also any idea on cost?

Oh also one more thing can it be made to look like ID6? Or is it the wrong unit for that?

I was a bit disappointed it doesn’t have a touchscreen however the I drive knob navigates it pretty well

drop me a PM - costs wise, cable is £16 from Amazon - battery chargers aren't really suitable because they don't produce enough amps to maintain the battery, however you can fully charge the battery and get away with it.

Rest of the items are free.

because on version X & Y full screen carplay is just a coding parameter, where as on earlier versions you have to SSH into the HU to change the aspect ratio to allow full screen - on your version it can be done with a USB stick - drop me a PM and I'll help you out, no charge.

Wibbles was super helpful to me but after reading the instructions I think I’m going to give it a miss. Seems a bit complicated for me and I’m worried about bricking the unit or something.

it's a piece of cake in reality, you just need to have some cahjones to press the start button once the flashing is set up in esys.

Once the bootloader is flashed, if anything fails after that the unit can be recovered.
