Got my first M5!

Hello,

I just got my first M5 over the weekend. Years ago, all through middle school, high school and college M3's/M5's were my dream car. I had a few M3's. Then went through a phase of focusing on my career while driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla. It was a great feeling to finally step into one of my longtime dream cars!

Anyways, I had a couple of questions I haven't been able to find great answers to and didn't want to create lots of threads.

Is it possible to turn off the easy entry/exit? The seat bolsters go out, but when getting back in they never go back to the same position. I'm pretty lean and need them all the way in, and it takes a while to do that adjustment.

After an ECU tune, what's the next best mod, downpipes or intake? What kind of gains are expected? Seems like it may not be worth it. Everything I've found is tune and downpipes. I'm curious how much downpipes add to a tune.

Should the footwells have color led lighting? Mine are just white, but the display shows them being the set color and somewhere else I read that they are supposed to be.

Are there any good tires for the 20 inch wheels (drag radials or r compound) that will hook up well off the line with a tune? I saw someone broke into the 9 second 1/4 mile range with a tune, downpipes and drag radials.

Same here, why tune while the car is under warranty? Aren't 600/625 hp not enough?

Yeah, I'm not worried about it. Has anyone actually blown an engine from a JB4?

What is going on here? I thought most of the people here were all about modding their cars? Someone just posted their new M5 with a JB4/HR M550 springs (https://f90.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1655982), etc. and no one commented saying "Why would you do that? You just lost the warranty!" In my first post here after a test drive, saying the car felt slow, if I remember right more than one person said a tune would change that. Which comes back to why I want to mod it, yes, it feels like it could use more power.

You went from a 2005 Corolla to an M5 and it feels slow? What kind of tune did you have on the Corolla? You should totally get the same one for the M5.

Haha. I used to race shifter karts. Everything feels slow after them. Granted they aren't any faster to 60 than an M5, it felt a LOT faster. Sitting a half an inch off the ground, banging through gears with a loud engine right beside you makes it feel fast. They also get to 40 in a little over a second.

Anyways, let's just forget the mods question.

You're a good sport. When I read about your Corolla, it reminded me of my 1986 CRX-si (no idea why). Man I loved that car. Handled like a go cart. 1.5 liter inline 4 that put out 96 HP. Lots of fun...

It's crazy how cars like that can be the most fun. I had a few M3's and after going to college/being broke I got a 1990 Mazda Miata with 180k miles. It had some rock hard old tires on it and it was the most fun car I have ever owned! I think it's because you can push cars like that to the limit on the road without going fast at all. I could flick that car sideways anywhere I wanted. So much fun. Sure the M5 can do the same, but you have to be going so fast that any mistake is costly. In the those types of cars you just spin out and come to a stop before hitting anything lol.

By the way, do you have an M5? I just see C63s in your profile. I had one of those on order, but they keep pushing back the release date for the 2020 model. I'm a little regretful that I didn't wait. I think the M5 is a "better" car. It's faster and nicer. Those seem more exciting though. Wondering if you could compare them.

Not sure why you got the hater time of day responses on the mods. There are some guys here who can be a great resource for you. Post pics of the car btw. For the mods it seems like you've been around enough to understand the risks so by all means, go crazy!

I love seeing these land barges ripping off 10 second quarter miles, truly physics defying machines.

Nothing to do with hate... but why taking the risk? We had one case here on the forum with a tune. Car broke down, engine failure... most probably it had nothing to do with his tune... but they found out about it thus he lost his warranty...

In the end... it's your car, do as you like. Most common tunes I read about here are: Down pipes, race cat (or delete), exhaust, airbox and engine tune.

Considering the dampers people go with the K&W V4 if I recall correctly.

Other stuff is about cosmetics and looks.

Go take a look at my 2020 M5 Comp thread. It lists all my mods and performance gains/numbers from a JB4.

And no, to whoever asked, 625hp is not enough. It's possible to provide cautionary guidance without implied judgement.

Because he wants to. You neither need to know nor understand.

Advise, don't judge.

Sadly, I have heard of that but the car was highly mod'd and the JB4 was doing its job trying to properly exploit those mods.

I'm sounding like a broken record but I've had JBs on:
  • 2 x F10 550s
  • 3 x F10 M5s
  • 2 x F06 M6 GCs
  • 1 x X5M
  • 2 x F90 M5 Comps
... the latter of those two being my daily driver, no problems yet.

Nod, that was me. And yeah, I didn't get the Spanish Inquisition--not that I want it but...

So far at least, I've yet to drive a car (even my own) that has *enough* power.

Congrats!

Is it possible to turn off the easy entry/exit?
Is it Live Cockpit (2020) or a 2019? Linking your driver profile to your key fob (or selecting it manually) should restore the seating position once you've plugged the seat-belt in but, having said that, I occasionally need to repeatedly press and hold seat position 1 to restore everything. Doing so before you're in the car restores everything in a single push.

After an ECU tune, what's the next best mod, downpipes or intake?
JB4 only on 92 pump yielded 715 awhp and 740 Ft Ibs of aw-torque on a Mustang dyno.

Should the footwells have color led lighting?
The ambient color choices are typically grouped as one single color or a combo of that color + white. Perhaps you've got the white setting. I'll check a bit later but I think my footwells are blue albeit not quite as vivid as the bands of color around the dash.

With my current setup, I'm expecting this to be a 10.3 or better car on race gas. As it stands, though, I've upgraded to Michelin PS4s @295/30/20 rear and 285/30/20 front and I have no traction issues on even crap surfaces. I've not seen an F90 in the 9s yet, hmmm, at least I don't think--do you have a link?

Thank you! That's all great information. 715 awhp on 92 octane!? Okay, I think I'll be good with just a JB4. That's insane. It doesn't need to be much faster I think. Sometimes I floor it and it seems to pull crazy hard, feels like a rollercoaster. Other times it's just not THAT fast. I want it to feel like that all the time. That's all.

It's a 2019, doesn't have live cockpit. The seat returns to the correct position, everything except the side bolsters? Maybe I need to look into custom coding to make it stay in place?

That would be great if you could check on the footwell lighting. It's on the all blue setting. Footwell is still white. Definitely not a big deal, but would prefer it to match.

Hmm, I tried to post the link to the 9 second M5 but it wont let me. Google, "Bolt on BMW F90 M5 from Ramon Performance". Had tune, downpipes and midpipes.

That's good to hear. I think I've seen one or two people have issues, ever. If I remember right, one guy mis shifted and over reved the engine, the other had a bad spark plug put in with a tune. BMW covered the second one. Plus, it's hard for a dealer to detect a JB4 if it has been removed. And I'm going to get mechanical breakdown insurance which has covered things like blown engines for other people. If all of that fails, I'll just have to suck it up and pay. Seems like there's a very small risk.

It's funny when you google blown engine from tune, some forums like Ford have hundreds of posts with people blowing their engines lol. BMW/Mercedes it almost never seems to be an issue.

Thanks! I'll try to get some pictures up.

Me too. I can't wait to race my boss in his new GT3 RS. Hopefully I'll have the JB4 by then haha.

I've got a 2020 M5 on order - it's currently on a boat in the middle of the Atlantic. I love my C63s (convertible)- but I'm ready for a more practical daily driver. The C63 rides pretty harshly, and the trunk is all but useless (I have to pull my driver out to put a set of golf clubs in the trunk). It's really, really well built though. No issues, no rattles, really love the car all the way around. It'll be a fun weekender.
