Good Morning M5ers!

I have a genuine first world problem I'm trying to sort through, whether to buy an F90 M5 Competition or an X7 M50i. I recognize I'm on the M5 fourm and make get flamed for this, but here goes!

Over the course of 2013-2019 I've had the following vehicles:

2013 F10 M5
2014 F10 M5 Competition
2014 F10 M5 Competition with a BMS tune
2017 750i M-sport, lowered
2019 X5 50i

I swapped out of the X5 and have been driving a loaner car while waiting for my X7 to show up. I ordered the X7 M50i with Carbon Metallic with Extended Shadowline trim so it will look sporty, but I just can't stop thinking it will be a Mommy-mobile.

As usual, I have been browsing the M5 forums, and looking at some of these amazing cars and mods being done, and can't help but think I'm about to make a big mistake. I like the size of the X7 as I have 2 young sons but they only ride with me a couple of times/week and usually for short distances. My wife has a GL550 so that serves as the family truckster.

Furthermore, I sold my 911 C4S as I simply wasn't driving it enough so the X7 will be my only vehicle.

I do recognize the that I probably sound like a complete toolbag and this is an elitist conundrum, but I'm guessing that some of you on this forum have experienced the same "problem".

Thanks in advance!

M5 is huge, if size is important to you. Crazy car however, will run circles around any X7.

If you just need room for 4 big adults M5 = X7. If you need third row, then you need the X7. If you do not need the third row or a huge hatch, M5 for the win. Acceleration and handling are in another world.

You just said you have a family hauler... No need for 2 boring cars in the fleet.

I have 2 younger children as well and used a Challenger Hellcat as my daily driver for 3 years and that worked well for picking up the kids peroptically. You've had a number of M5s... Should be a no-brainer unless you value driving an SUV more. If that's the case, why not an X5M or X6M?

Get the M5 period. I have 2 young sons as well & was considering X7. Wife drives a F150 & it's plenty as a family hauler. 8 year old said no to X7 since he rode in the F10. So I went with the F90 M5.

Is a question of performance (with capacity to set 4 adults) or extended capacity with a 3rd row and a so so driving experience.

I’d go for the M5 but you need to do what’s right for you. I’ve never owned or DDen an M5 but I’m dying for the day I do.

At least you have a good sense of self deprecating humor. Clarification: if you weren't driving the 911 enough does that mean you were usually riding with your wife? It sounds like your family only has two cars or is it three?

It's not that crazy of a choice to make. I have an E92 M3 and an '15 X50i, which is my daily grocery getter and winter beater. I was planning on trading the X5 for a X5 M50i. I have a set of winter wheels and tires from the current X5, but it turns out the new X5's have a different bolt pattern. So, I started thinking about all the times I drove the X5 and wish I was driving the M3. Maybe I'll just get an X5M, then I will want to drive it more. But I would have to wait another year. So I ended up ordering the M5C. It makes no sense that I'm going to have an M3 and an M5. But the 5 is all wheel drive and I've got wheels and winter tires ordered, so it will be my new winter beater and grocery getter. Even though it makes no sense, I got what I wanted.

Thanks for all the opinions and help, it's pretty clear that the consensus is M5.

Part of what I'm trying to do is change it up a little bit and some extra room would be nice. BUT I think the X7 will get boring.

The 911 was the third car, 4K miles in 2 years, awesome car but got annoyed with the depreciation and just sold it.

X5M does seem like the most common sense choice, but the more I thought about it... The X5M carries 5 passengers. The M5 carries five passengers. The X5M carries more cargo in the back. But have you seen the trunk on M5. It is the same width and it is extremely deep. Just not as high. So I'm not sure the cargo area is really that much bigger on the X. My only hesitation was if we get an unusual winter storm with a foot or more of snow. Ground clearance could be an issue, but I'll just wait until everyone else has packed the snow down then ground clearance isn't an issue any more.

The X5C is not on my list, the rear seat is no bigger than the M5 and historically BMW hasn't done enough to differentiate it from the X5 with M-sport. Perhaps that will all change with the new model release.

My father and mother had 5 children and drove a VW bug for a couple of years. Room for two children really? If it were me I would have went the M5 route.

I looked at a loaded X7 when I was in for service this past summer.

The X7 is very nice, but the third row is a PITA. Small. ( got back there) Smaller than my current Q7 (I have ridden back there to prove point to my kids, ya it's tight), but the back in the X7 was PAINFUL for another very important reason.....it takes DAYS, I am telling you DAYS for the power seats to move. And if you want to fold them down, better plan ahead if it's raining when you are trying to put stuff in there.

But the interior is VERY NICE......did not drive it but sat in all the seats....man the second row seats are crazy! LOL. Front seats nice too.

You cannot sit three across in the second row in the one I looked at since it had captains chairs in the rear.

And to be honest, trying to sit three across in the M5 is tough since the center hump is pretty big. Rear foot room is limited in the M5. My RS6 (2003) had more room for the rear seat passengers as the seats on the M5 are more beefy ie. FAT!

If you want to move 5 adults.....you need a bigger sedan. The interior of the huge X7 is really not that huge compared to 7 Series or A8L.

If you want to move 6 adults......get a minivan.

Mike

I am in a very similar boat. My x6M lease expires early next year and it's unclear if the new x5m or x6m will be out and deals available at that time. I am cross shopping M5 and x7 5.0. Can't seem to make up my mind. x7 offers a lot of space but will probably not feel fast or aggressive enough after two x6ms in a row. M5 seems like a great car but I am concerned about driving it during the NY winters even with the AWD given the low ground clearance.

I believe that you generally have to decide where you are on the SUV spectrum...because very few Vs have both a lot of S and lot of U. I personally like a really big SUV that has lots of U and then a separate car that has lots S. I really don't believe one rig does both the way you want....

Congrats! You made the right choice. Mommymobiles are boring, why have two? M5Comp is definitely not boring.

X6M has been a perfect car for me for 6 years. Ton of power on demand, versatility and plenty of space in the back. So definitely S and V, not sure I need a ton of U for every day driving.
