OK, final update. BMW are confirming it is in alignment with the new EU regulation and the PPF, I have shared with BMW this has been the case since 2018, however for some reason BMW has taken the opportunity to quieten the exhaust since July 1st 2019. I have approached this as misrepresentation due to the M Sports exhaust (which you can add to an M5 or comes within the competition pack) sounding exactly the same as the standard with the only difference being the black tailpipes.

It can not be legal or ethically correct for BMW to accept orders and money for something that is now technically and audibly equal. I approached BMW with their sales figures based on M5 Competition cars only (not M5 with exhaust option) manufactured for the UK market since July 1st and suffice to say it runs into hundreds of thousands of pounds BMW have taken for the exhaust part of the pack.

My dealership is negotiating (firmly on my side of the argument) on my behalf and think it likely I will be offered £2000 in compensation however even if this is the case I am left with the problem.

I am not sure if there is an aftermarket software or hardware fix to this issue, seems on the face of it to be software but I am not clear.

To coin the phrase I am "exhausted" with this issue and just feel let down and disappointed, the car is SOOOOO good in every other way and I finally thought BMW had resolved the weak sound from historic M5's (this is my 5th and 3rd generation). Gutted.

If anyone has any advice or options on how to resolve as this issue becomes wider please do let me know.

That's entirely true. I've been researching exhaust options, I wanted to go for MPE, but BMW don't sell the MPE in Europe. Asked my dealership why is that and they told me it's due to EU sound regulations. I'm fairly sure it's due to the PPF. My dealership also wasn't sure if my car had a PPF, they told me it most likely doesn't have one, but it does

mine just turned one year, it has the PPF since all EU F90 competition do and has the pops and bangs , was looking forward to trade in and get a 20 with the Live cockpit, Idrive 7 and laser lights . now after hearing that the exhaust sucks the dilemma starts

well i member here in Croatia got a software update last month i guess and has a '' deeper , fruitier '' sound as he described it . it changed but definitely didn't get quite

Yeah it seemed like he go the "US update" . I tried updating the software on mine and they didn't touch the ECUs for some reason - presumably because there wasn't a more recent software.

he did that at the BMW dealership and i don't think they do that . i mean you can't choose what software you get

That's right, the dealership can't update specific modules. Their system automatically determines which modules to update. For some reason his car got the "US update", with the louder pops and bangs, while on my car the ECUs weren't updated, but the NBT for example did get updated.

Nothing noticeable in terms of features, but all my stored quick dial shortcuts (the 1-7 buttons) were wiped, along with some other minor settings. I'm sure the ECUs weren't updated because the coding for remembering the start/stop settings were still there (and they were wiped when they did the 1200 mile service).

In February I was at the Brand Experience Center. A BMW Genious told me that it takes a bit longer to get the full performance due to the new PPF. Thus they had them already installed since 2018 I guess.

Switzerland is NOT part of the EU... and yet, no MPE available here. I hope we still get the sound...

True, but you still have very strict eco norms, much like the EU. I think you're getting the silenced version in 2020 :/

I have been looking on the BMW ETK parts catalogue and cars with and without the crackles have the same part numbers for the complete exhaust system including the PPF so I guess it must be a software change.

Agreed Ian335xd however how do we access that software update now to get the noise back? I am sure there is a simple way around this if there is someone one out there (tuning company etc...) that knows of the issue and has addressed it.

I hope so, guide me if you hear of anything being made available.

I'am putting pressure on BMW to change the software,not sure it will work but the more people that complain the more chance of that happening.

So in order to bring the "old" Sound back we have to do a software tune? If that's the case the warranty will get lost, right?

I will cancel my order on the M5C if there wont be a solution to bring the "old" Sound back without warranty loss..

The problem is that your bmw dealer is not allowed and not able to change your software!

As promised - talked with my man at BMW - he got answer from the M Division from Germany. They silenced the cars due to the new regulations. Switzerland is also affected. He told me that they had several customers which, once informed or noticed at delivery that something changed simply refused to take the car!!!! All M models are affected... M2/5/8, X3/4/5/6 M and M Performace versions.

Today when I walked to the parked car I had this smile in my face... a feeling I was missing for the last four years... I was happy and could not wait to sit in the car and start the engine... for now I would still get the car... and Singapur grey is growing on me with it's blue/purple shining... long story short...
