Disable ASD (Artificial Sound) in cabin

Hi Everyone,
This has been posted before on the site but it was a little confusing to some on where exact location was of the module. Attach are a couple of photos that are pretty self explanatory on how to do. Such an easy mod that anyone can give it a try to see if they prefer the natural engine sound.

My spec 2019 F90-M5 Competition with B&W Sound. I think this would apply to all F90 models regardless of options. I have not experienced any faults on car and did this mod 1 week after I took delivery.

Enjoy.

Done. It was a little more of a PITA than I thought it would be. I still don't understand why BMW can't just make a turbo engine sound good. Mercedes has it down! I don't notice much difference with it unplugged. But it's nice knowing that what I'm hearing is real at least.

Doesn't binocular button on the center console next to the gear shifter turn it off too?

Nice write up.

I dont want to discount your post as its good information but you can code the ASD off in about 11 seconds with Bimmercode or other coding software/ hardware.

Yes, i agree that coding would be much easier but I don't have a coding device. This was the easy free way to get the annoying sound out. I would like to get a coding device but not sure which one to get for the F90. Which one do you have and can it be bought in US?

I use BimmerCode + VGate dongle for simple stuff or have E-SYS + Cable for the heavy stuff.

I was told it could not be programmed out and it also can not be disconnected ?
Has anybody had any issues after disconnecting it ?

… or get a 2020 and ponder what they did to ASD since, to my ears, it's all-but gone.

I understood why the soundaktor was in my Vw gti but my M5? Sheesh. If I go down the coding alley, that ASD will be the first thing I disable.

I coded the ASD out on M5 and there was almost no exhaust noise in the cabin. The car actually sounded quite dull inside. I coded it back on

I don't have any exhaust mods, yet. I have an Akrapovic slip-on on order, but it's not here yet.

Just to clarify....

- ASD can be coded out or disconnected. No ill effects or MILs.
- ASD is not exhaust noise - it's intake noise effect. The exhaust still makes it own natural noises but the well insulated m5 mutes that pretty good.
- Pressing the exhaust button (deactivating) will mute ASD effect and of course close the exhaust valves if you are in Sport or Sport +
- Disabling ASD will cause you to be bored due to lack of audio cues about what the car is doing. Only real cure is down pipes and full system :-)

I don't really agree with most of those statements.

It actually produces exhaust noise, not intake noise. It's rather noticeable with ASD disabled.

Pressing the exhaust button mutes the exhaust too. I have ASD disabled and have an Akrapovic axle back. The exhaust tone noticeably changes when deactivating the exhaust button, as well when changing the engine mode to Sport Plus - not just the burbles/pops, the exhaust tone gets throatier in Sport Plus too.

Entirely agree with that. Even with the M Sport exhaust the sound insulation in the F90 is pretty good and disabling the ASD makes the car rather dull from the inside. I fixed that with the Akrapovic axle back, now it's perfect.
