That's assuming all states would allow M3. I know my state requires vanity plates to start with 2 letters (among other rules, numbers can only be at the end, not intermingled with the letters, etc).

Right, good point.

I know we allow it here in Michigan. Simply because I know the guy who has the "M2" Michigan plate.

I could see this being pretty cool on an older classic M3. Kind of dumb on something more recent though.

Does Colorado not reissue plates?

I had a personalized plate for a few years and I didn't renew it and went back two years later and wanted it again but someone else already had it.

Is this Colorado guy going to keep paying yearly registration fees on a plate he won't use?

Not sure how CO works. In Ohio you can't sell plates to another person legally.

When I tried to transfer my personalized motorcycle plate to my buddy when he bought my bike, I was told I couldn't-- there was some sort of waiting period (maybe 18 months?) before he could apply for the same plate.

Go figure.

The worst license plates EVER are the redundant ones, especially ones that just says the model name. It’s like: now I know you have an M3 cuz the license plate says so; oh wait there’s a badge also just a few feet away.....

Exactly. I personally laugh when I see a car with a vanity plate that designates the model of the car. Why bother? At least IMO the entire point of a vanity plate is to make some sort of unique statement vs just calling out the model of the car.

I think it's cool to have a plate like that. If I owned an m3 and saw that for sale in CA, i would pay $1,000 for it.

It's rare, it's obvious, and it's something to appreciate. When you are done, hang it in the garage for art.

well worth the money to me.

All license plates (within a state) are "rare" and one of a kind.

Vanity plate....

Secured this plate in 2002 - for my new 2002 Honda S2000....sold the S2000 one yr later and the plate sat dormant until I purchased my 2007 BMW Z4MR in 2010....just paid the annual licensing and it's an extra charge of $42 for a vanity plate - as stated earlier in this thread, vanity plates are specific to each state.

I'm gonna move to CO, and put it on a truck, or maybe my Miata, or something that's not an M3.

In PA, I'm sure other states as well, we have specialty plates that have a prefix which often blends in with the design of an alumni logo or something of that sort. Find an association you are okay with being affiliated with, pay a slightly higher fee, and depending on the size of that organization, you could have a much higher chance of availability.

M3 is readily available for the University of Pittsburgh Alumni Association, as is 0,2,3,4,5,6,7,8, and 9. You just have to be okay with having the Pitt script logo on your plate, and "be a fan or friend of the University"

For those in PA interested (in Pitt or other associations):
