unfortunately i'm in the same boat, i had an engine in my last F10 due to failure, now mine has the same issue yours did, just waiting on BMW technical to come back with a solution.

I fear the worst also. don't think i'll go ahead with it if its required as i have already had big issues with this car in the past month and it just on 4k miles.

BMW what is going on with these engines!!!

if it gets loud enough i would definitely have it looked at. Mine started with a light tick and got worst over time. Sometimes the car would shake during startup

I know what your saying its just the inconvenience of having no motor and coming to terms that you pride and joy has an issue.

BMW came back to me yesterday asking how long ago i noticed it and if it had got louder, but i only recently noticed it. only 4k on the clocks

still no solution yet

But bmw wanted them to ship the engine back immediately to do testing.

How did you get on with the dealer getting you a new car, i should find out today the outcome of mine, any info would be great on replacing the car, always best to reference a successful case

Mine makes this noise too. I wasn't too worried about it until I read this thread! Seems a lot of people are having this noise though, are we sure it's not just normal for this engine?

I should have an update today.

They’ve dropped the oil and it was ok…next step from technical is new oil, new filter, unplug solenoid valve (I think that’s what its called) and reply back how it is after that. Theyre doing it tomorrow

the above was there reply to my last update, why would they unplug the solenoid valve?

hope it gets fixed soon, off touring around the Black forest and the Swiss Alps on the 19th, be gutted if i can't go!

Bloody M cars eh!

With these complex engines, there will be some valve train/mechanical noises. Of course, there is normal, and abnormal.

This thread is certainly an example of why NOT to have your car tuned or otherwise substantially modified, even if the mod is not the cause... .

They do sound the same which is a worry. Was thinking about moving from an F10 M5 to an F90 but just dont want the hassle of potential issues which I hoped would have been fixed by now

Do we know what (if any) the differences are between F10 and F90 S63 motors?

Curious about this case since my car makes the exact same noise as the OP's. Never thought anything was wrong since the car ran fine and noise was only there when cold and for a few moments but am very concerned now. Should i take a video and show it to my service advisor???

The car is brand new has 3000km on it and have noticed this before the break in service. Is this something i need to worry about? anybody else notice this? I will attach a video of the noise thank you

Do you think mine is the same problem? My engine makes the noise from 0:25 in the video i took here

taw6189, that does not sound normal to me... i'd take that in. show them that video as well if they can't "replicate it"

the car does have some normal ticking when it's completely cold, but my dads f90 doesn't sound like that.

Thanks for that, my advisor confirmed that the hydraulic lifters in the engine make thjs noise when adjusting during cold starts and is normal for the f90. Ill remain calm as long as i have warranty i guess

this is funny, i used to have a c63, and i had a very strange noise on startup. I took it to one dealer, said it was normal. I knew it wasn't normal, so i took it to another one, and low and behold, hydraulic lifters were bad. 5k job.

I'd get a 2nd opinion if possible.. But if it isn't, like you said, at least you have warranty. If engine goes bye bye, BMW is on the hook for a much larger bill.

Apparently (as per my SA) BMW m5 lacks top end oil pressure upon start up causing hydraulic lifters to adjust noisily. If this happens only on cold start ups then it is normal. I really would like a second opinion though but im not rushed
