Lightbulb HOW TO: Carbon Fibre Gear Shifter Install

Hi guys,

I did search and couldn't find any how to on the install of the carbon fibre gear shifter so thought id take some pics along the way and give a brief explanation to make it easier for anyone trying this in the future.

Tools Needed:
Plastic Trim Tools
T7 Torx

First take a thin trim tool and pry out the Gear Intensity switch from the top of the lever.

Then remove the large plastic cover from the top of the lever, I found this was best done starting at the top. working the way down the edge and then pull upwards.

Remove the 4 torx t7 screws.

Starting at the top pry each silver side piece off working downwards, at the bottom you need to pull out and up.

Remove the lower plastic trim with the plastic lighting prisms. Start near the leather and pry towards the rear of the car.

Swap the switch rubbers & gasket from the old piece to the new piece, here you can see 1 switch rubber removed and one still in place at the top of the piece.

Follow the previous steps in reverse for installation. Please make sure you have transferred the switch rubbers and gasket prior to installation as once you've clicked the top cover on and rocker switch its too late to fix as you'll more than likely damage some clips removing the items again.

Hope this helps someone and makes the job a little easier.

Thanks

Steven.

That looks great, I love how the leather part stays and just the aluminum is replaced. Are you planning to carbon Fiberize the rest of the tacky aluminum trim seen all over the interior especially on the steering wheel? The plain aluminum cheapens an otherwise beautiful interior.
Btw, what part number is that shifter piece? Thanks

I don't like the Performance steering wheel so probably won't change that, if I were to do anything id probably get the current trim skinned to keep the gap in the middle.

I've already changed the paddle shifters to Paddleshifterz, see this thread:

How do you feel the CF compares to the interior trim CF in your build? Is it so different that it sticks out, blends in better?

Hi there.

I have numerous carbon pieces within the interior now, shifter, paddle shifters and the steering trim.

I prefer the darker look and I think the aluminium carbon look trim is very classy and suits this car well and adding some extra ‘real’ carbon looks great to me.

See this image.

Thank you for the writeup, knocked this out yesterday and your step by step helped a ton!

For those with a 2020, the screws are a T6 Torx. It's also important when putting in the new large cover, to put it in straight down, don't rock it in by installing the bottom first then the top (which would have been the opposite of removing it).

ETA: just did mine and it was easy overall, removing the gear intensity switch took me about 15 mins and i was careful in not to snap anything off and never had to do anything with the rubber gaskets. it was a T6 used also.

I just purchased this trim used. Is it only the trim that is swapped out or are there other parts that are included and MUST be swapped?
