Trade-in 335i for M3

It's a 2007 335i with 10,000 miles. Sorry for my ignorance, but how would I go about doing this, and what kind of deal would I get on either an 08 or 09 E92 M3?

The 335i is purchased.

How would you go about doing it? Well since you want to trade it in, contact the local dealerships and see which one gives you the best deal? For than likely, the dealership(s) that quote you a good price on the M3 will give you crappy trade in value for your 335i and vice versa.

You're at least going to take a $10,000 depreciation hit for sure. I think you'll be lucky if you get $35,000 on a trade in value.

Thanks...$10,000 is a lot. I wanted to see what my options were. I suppose I could strike a great deal but that would take quite a bit of searching.

$10,000 would be a bargain since the depreciation hits the most during the first year. The higher they are, they harder they fall.

I traded in my Accord after 10 months of owning it, took a $7,000 hit on a $25,000 car. I traded my Evo after 15 months of owning it, took a $12,000 hit on a $35,000 car.

You can also try CarMax too, they might give you a bit more than the dealership, but if you want the most, sell it privately.

True..I guess 10K would be ideal in my case. I probably won't get more than 35K for it.

With M3's going for 60K...I would take a 15K hit (worst case scenario).

Worst case scenario would be a bigger hit. Since the car market, both new and used, are in the tanker right now, the value for your car is going to be less.

If the dealership buys your car for 35k, they would probably sell it for 40k. At that point, if I were to buy the car, I'd rather just work out a better deal on a brand new 335i with no miles and pay a bit more money.

The only thing you have going for you is the low mileage, 10k miles, but it's also an '07...2 years old.

There is no way any dealer will give 35k for that car. Its sad, but true. At most he will get between 24 and 28 thousand. I bought my lease out for 24,700. Its very well equipped and had 30k miles on it. The values are very low for 335's right now.

I agree--if you look at eBay, there are "buy it now" 2k7 335 coupes with low mileage, for 31'ish. I don't believe they are from authorized dealerships, so dealerships probably sell 'em for 35k. They expect to make money on new and used cars, so they'd give 30 in the best case imho. More like high 20's. Thing to keep in mind is cash is much better than a used car when you're going in to a dealership. That's why the private party transaction exists.

I don't know why but there seems to be a notion that if one is a good negotiator, they can make it worthwhile to get rid of a 1-3 y.o. car with little of a depreciation hit. It doesn't seem that it could be the case, but who knows until you try.

Its the buyers market but selling a car your out of luck especially trading it in for another! Going to rape you...Better off trying to sell it to private market than trade in!

Agreed with everyone saying you'd get best dollar out of private sale.

To make things worse, though, I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't know of too many people who are going to walk over to a private seller and pay $30k+ cash on the barrel for a used car.
Their reasoning would be, I think, "If I'm paying that kind of money, why not go to a dealership and get a CPO for a bit more?"

So to the OP: like my first post suggested, it'd be stupid (financially) to switch over to an M3 in your current situation. Only do it if you can afford the major hit to your bank account, and you really really really really really really love the M3.

In today's market it would probably be a heck of a lot smarter to install a JB3 and call it a day...

Dude, you're going to take a bath. Give a couple of dealerships a call and see for yourself. Then you can come back crying to us about how little your 07 335i is worth now.
