Second expansion tank incoming...
Yes, once again, the expansion tank must be replaced.
This ridiculous design flaw needs to be addressed unless they plan to replace these under warranty forever. How annoying...

The aftermarket billet $750-1000 tank won’t leak though the cap could still release coolant if pressure is too high. Keeping the coolant a little cooler might reduce pressure. Heat causes expansion.

but i have a feeling if BMW sees that aftermarket tank they would find a way not to pay for any warranty work etc.

Yes - BMW can deny warranty for aftermarket parts and tune. If you have a warranty, you can rely on that instead. I like mods and DIYing — I don’t need the tank. I have addressed the issue through other ways. But for some it is worth considering.

I own a 2022 and have had no issues with the tank, is this only on pre- LCI M5's?

Perhaps we should start an email campaign where everyone on this forum takes responsibility of sending an email to BMW corporate asking for a status of the permanent solution? We can take turns, and everyone can follow up once a month. At some point they will get sick and tired of our emails and fix it.

“ Hello, I own a 2023 M5 (purchased new in November 2022 from BMW of XYZ). It's my first BMW and I love the overall M5 driving experience. However I am deeply concerned about the coolant expansion tank. I actively participate in online F90 forums, and it seems like the coolant expansion tank seems to fail for almost all owners (both pre-LCI and LCI). In many cases, it also damages critical engine components underneath the tank and results in expensive repairs. While interacting with other owners, I learned that these failures keep happening (even with the recently revised part number) and there are several owners that needed the tank replaced multiple times (an owner I interacted with on bimmerpost today is on tank #8 !!!!!). Can you please advise what's your plan to properly and permanently fix this issue? It's a major design flaw impacting all F90 M5s (ticking time bomb), and I am very surprised to see no official recall and replacement part that properly fixes this critical issue. Appreciate your help in advance, |

Heard back from them today, very generic and hand wavy response:
“Thanks for writing to BMW regarding your 2023 BMW M5 and congratulations on your recent purchase. I’m sorry to learn of your concerns about the coolant expansion tank. While I do understand the importance of your concern, please know that we rely solely on the service teams at our authorized BMW centers to assist our customers with maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing vehicles. To locate a center for assistance, please visit www.BMWUSA.com/dealer. Should you need to contact Customer Relations and Services again, you can reach us at 1-800-831-1117 Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. ET and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET. Have a nice day. Kind regards, Abigail Customer Relations and Services Representative” I pushed back: “ Hi Abigail, Thank you for getting back to me. This issue is not about an individual vehicle, but a manufacturing defect that is impact all F90 M5s. Can you please share my original message with the team responsible for developing the M5 product and request that they respond on how they are planning to permanently fix this issue? Please understand that this is a serious concern shared by dozens of M5 owners I am in communication with. Waiting for the failure to happen on a given F90 M5 and going to a service center is NOT a good recommendation since it may already be too late and the damage already done. “ |

Just bought my 2018 M5, very first thing I had checked was the expansion tank. Mine is good for now... but how long did your last tank go for mileage wise?
