@ASG99 I hope you test drove the m550 so you can be fully aware of how significant and awesome and upgrade you made when you compare to the m5c!

Ha cant wait! Quick test of 550 so not a lot of seat time. Nice car for sure. Just really wanted an M5 more I thought about it and like I said dealer got one in which was shocking to me. I can imagine the difference and am pretty sure it will exceed what I am thinking.

It will FAR exceed your expectations if you've only driven the M550i and not the M5 yet. From the moment you press that engine-start button you will KNOW.

You are correct it has 100% exceeded my expectations so far. Not even laying into it too hard it's a rocket. This break in is going to be tough. The luxury for such a performance oriented sedan is impressive too. Truly the whole package. I'm sure if I ended up with the 550 I'd be none the wiser and feel it is a great car, but the M5 has more of what I was looking for.

It's funny because the finance manager at my dealer is originally from Australia and told me that in his country everyone buys the M550i if they want the hotted-up 5 series, not the M5 because there the M5 costs nearly TWICE as much as the M550i after taxes. It just doesn't make financial sense to spring for the M5 in Australia.

A $20k difference here in the US doesn't seem so bad, especially when you consider the specialness of the M5.

I wonder why as USD not that much stronger than AUD. The price difference between the 550 I ordered and my M5 was about 30k. I have also heard some say 550 sounds better than M5. The luxury and all out performance blend of M5C is phenomenal. I am of course very happy I have one in my garage.

I didn't think the Australian M550i vs M5 price difference could be that bad either and then I checked their website. See the pics.

M550i base price $159,450 AUD
M5C base price $251,450 AUD (they only get the M5C, no base M5)
= $92,000 AUD difference which is about $72,000 USD. It's not double the M550i price but it's a much bigger price bump than in the US.

More crazy is that $251,450 AUD = $197,000 USD!!!

That is insane. I am guessing all imported vehicles in Australia are expensive. Can't imagine what Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini etc go for there. Throw in this global chip shortage dealers don't have to discount.
Feel fortunate to have my M5 with all this craziness.

Question about buying out a lease early. I've read a few posts about dealers buying people out of their leases early and getting them into a new ride. I know BMW does not do a "pull ahead" of sorts, but do dealers frequently do this or does it just depend on the numbers of the lease payoff?

I have a 2018 F90 with 19k miles on it and 6 mos left on my lease. Looking to get into a new LCI F90 or M8 at lease end or possibly earlier if I can. My payoff now is 78k. MSRP was 120k.

Also, if this was possible, does that transaction then count as a trade-in towards the new vehicle? In Texas we save taxes if we trade something in.

Just curious.

I've gotten calls, emails and letters from the dealer I bought my 18 m5 from offering to buy out that car and put me in a new m5 since May of last year - 24 months in on the 18's lease.
The catch however is that they wanted to offer me basically the same msrp and same monthly payment as I had on my 18 which was not a great deal as the m5 was newly released so deals were hard to come by. Plus the MF has only gotten lower since 2018 so I'm not sure who would have pulled the trigger on that deal.

What you should look into doing is take advantage of the lack of inventory in cars and see if you can make some money on your m5. The used car market is crazy right now so you may be able to take advantage especially with low miles like yours.
However the shortage of inventory bites you on the buy side as well, dealers aren't going to deal as much, so it may even out in the end. But you'll be in a new car - that is if you can find one.

I'm sort of in this boat... 19 M5 with 16k miles and turning in beginning of December. Debating taking advantage of the current markets by finding a buyer now, and just taking an Uber everywhere for a few months until inventory builds back up.

Is yours a lease? If so and you were to sell it outright, would you have to purchase/payoff it first and thus pay Texas sales tax....again!! Since we have to pay full tax upfront as well.

Yes I’m leasing. I would basically buy it (paying sales tax on the residual value of the vehicle now that it’s a 3-year old used car) and then turn around and sell it to whoever was willing to pay above what I bought it from BMWFS for. I believe the buyer of the vehicle would also pay sales tax on the agreed sales price. I would then pay sales tax on the next vehicle I ended up leasing/buying.

You probably know this, but I did not. If you trade-in your leased car early and work out a deal with BMW for a new leased car, (not financed) that transaction does act like a trade in thus reducing sales tax on the new car. That could be a 10k difference just in taxes alone you'd have to make up in a private sale. Just a thought as I'm going through the same exercise currently. And this is in Texas.

Assuming 75k payoff and 120k MSRP for new car:

75000 * 6.25% = 4687
120000 * 6.25% = 7500

120000 - 75000 = 45000 * 6.25% = 2812.

That's an excellent point, I was not aware of the early trade-in strategy to reduce the sales tax. If I go through a lease broker like Next Level Auto Brokers and the car is leased from out of state, I wonder how this comes into play.

Obviously it still depends on what they offer appraisal wise compared to your payoff. But I wouldn't think it matters out of state or not since you still have to pay taxes in Texas since that's where you register it.

you will do better selling it to a dealer and you don't have to pay any taxes ...
dealers are being aggressive with trade ins
just sold my M5C 2019 to a dealer and it was leased from BMWFS

It never makes sense to trade in a BMW lease unless there are only a few months left. Just post it up on Swapalease and find someone to take it over. It will save you thousands of dollars.

If you are looking to sell it outright then find a buyer and do a direct transfer. The sales tax skips over the original owner in this situation in most states since title transfers directly from BMWFS to the new buyer.
