Depends on how many times you want to stop, but they had a 67 gallon auxiliary tank.
Seems like they would have consumed around 450 gallons or so (maybe even a bit under since it seems 6 MPG was how quickly they were burning at top speeds, and they might have hit close to 10 at times). Their 67 gallon aux tank plus the 20.1 main tank means you're likely looking at 5 stops along the way. US limits pumps to 10 gallons per minute, so that's 45 minutes of pure fueling time just for the gas consumed. They could maybe cut that in half if they're able to stretch 2 nozzles at the same time, I can't imagine they can do that every time, though. So with a short off/on at well-planned fuel stops, I'm sure the absolute minimum would be 1 hour added.

The videos are misleading... those are shot from spotter cars that are actually talking to the Cannonball drivers and have advance warning of the pass. Most that I am familiar with slow down a LOT for general passing in order to do so safely, they hit max speed on open roadways. That's why Arne Toman said the AMG would have done even better on the COVID run, it could accelerate faster to top speed after slowing to safely pass people compared to the Audi Interceptor.

FYI for any would-be Cannonballers... Matt Farah's new garage is gorgeous and he will entertain short-term storage and shipping logistics to get your car back home to you. WCCS.com.
I literally called him when I got to the Portofino and he met me within the hour at his spot - on a Sunday morning when they weren't even fully open yet. Top notch facility, couldn't have been any easier.

Would we be excited or interested if these cannonball runs were run on an autobahn if one crossed the US?

I see both sides of the argument being made here but am undeniably awe struck by the planning, preparation and execution that it takes to pull off a run like this.
Years ago, I watched Alex Roy's 32 hours 7 minutes (run in an E39 M5) and experienced a significant emotional event. Ever since, I've been intrigued by the idea. Planning a run? Need an articulate, skillful participant with resources? Message me - I'm in!

Incriminating footage is usually posted one-year from the finish date. This is due to statute of limitations regarding reckless driving charges.

So, do these guys endorse the political statement represented by the sticker appearing at minute 5:50, or is that an attempt to diminish aggression from law enforcement?

100% to get in good favor with law enforcement. But honestly at those speeds no credentials would make much of a difference.

Good points for and against doing something as risky as a cannonball run. But given the fact we are in a big country with lots of open land in the middle of two major oceans, have automobiles and interstates it's inevitable someone is going to do it. Breaking records usually involves risk and often breaking the law. This is just another one.
Regarding going 150 mph plus for 25 hours straight that is inaccurate not to mention impossible. There are states and "some" expanses of interstate and highway and certain times of the day and night where that can be accomplished with minimal risk by a professional driver in the right car. I happen to live in one of those states, Nevada. We have many stretches of Highway that in the right car with a competent driver those speeds can be attained safely for fairly long periods. I'm not condoning it, jus sayin. |
