Coffee in center console = not a good situation LOL

Not exactly how I wanted to spend my evening last night, but the short story is that coffee spilled all over my center console and several of the buttons (setup, m-mode, etc.) stopped working. Well after removing the center console, switch modules, cleaning, etc., and about 2 hours of time, all is well. I have to appreciate the irony here as I don’t let my kids drink anything other than water in the car. My wife made it a point to tell the kids exactly what happened and I’m sure I’ll never hear the end of this. LOL

I was getting my car serviced and another car had that happen and nothing would function so it had to be towed in. It's also not covered by warranty. BMW knows what they are doing...

I just noticed your buttons are different than mine. Setup and MMode on yours, on mine have the steering/suspension/throttle controls there.

EDIT: Apparently they changed the design in the LCI. interesting.

This is my worst nightmare! Thankfully you're well versed enough to have been able to pull it all apart and resolve it!

I much preferred the setup in my pre-LCI to the new layout I have now. Those specific functions, at that specific location, made a lot of sense in my opinion.

I suppose that if you have properly configured dedicated M1 and M2 buttons, you don't need the old functionality as much, but it was nice to be able to change those settings individually without going into a menu or iDrive.

You are super lucky. My wife spilled water in her console of her X5 and it fried the brain/modules that control a ton of stuff. My dealer covered it under a goodwill gesture as we are long time customers but it would've been around 3 grand for me to have it replaced.

That looks SO much better than the plastic. Did it require coding? On the F80 side of the house, a member reported needing coding.

I've always hated how cheap the original one feels, and I think it would tie in nicely with piano black, as opposed to some of the other interior trims.

I think the trick may be to get the right hardware version. I lucked out that this was brand new on eBay Latvia. So no coding. I was expecting the heft and feel of my old F15 X5, but it really isn’t. So kind of meh in a sense, but the look is way better. Due to this, I’ll skip doing the HVAC controls front and rear.

Honestly, after stumbling across this vid on YouTube (
) and picking up this from Harbor Freight (https://www.harborfreight.com/trim-a...ece-64126.html) it was super simple to do. That's not to say I want to do this again as the iDrive controller (dealership price) alone is $1500+. I really do admire how modular the engineers made this car, or at least from this perspective.

Glad to hear it was relatively easy. The other post on this thread really makes me want to put in the ceramic iDrive controller. Awesome video and great little kit! Thank you for sharing! I think I am going to do it once I figure out which PN doesn't require coding for the F90.

I'm guessing this issue comes from more catastrophic coffee spillages but this thread reminds me how to make sure you face Starbucks coffee cups to avoid splashes if you want to gun it with your drinks. 😂

YIKES. It was likely the Cream and Sugar that did it. Black Coffee never offends electronics.

I use a travel mug with secure top that only pours when you push a button. I have seen similar carnage in Audi's.

I think it is an element of "Stupid Americans and their Cup Holders, We shall show them....."'

Just as dumb as putting the Coolant Tank over critical electronics.

LOL. I'm not a fan of Starbucks, but my wife is and I have to stop by there to pick her up a coffee on my way back from getting mine. She always gets the nitro cold brew and the opening on the lid they typically put on the cup is gaping to say the least. I request that they put the "sippy cup" lid on it (same as in your pic) and request a sticker to go over the opening.

As for my spillage event, it was a bit worse. The coffee shop I go to had to switch cup suppliers and the new cups were not as strong. I picked the cup up to take a drink, it taco'd, fell straight onto the center console, and the entire driver side of the car was coated in white chocolate mocha (myself included). Let's just say that the 15 min drive home was less than a happy one. I failed to mention in my first posts that silverstone doesn't look all that great when its spattered with brown spots.
