I will admit that I had considered making this switch as I do enjoy a smaller and more nimble car in general.
However, the current M3/4 are not that much smaller than the M5 and while they are a few hundred pounds lighter, it is not like going to a 911 and losing 800 lbs. Separately, I really enjoy the V8 power and flexibility in the M5. Huge acceleration is available at all RPM while I have read (but not checked first hand) that the M3/4 I6 is a bit weak below 3,000 RPMs. I will also admit that I may be getting soft in my old age. With that, I really enjoy the massage seats and the B&W sound system in the M5, neither of which are available in the M3/4. Finally, I purchased my M5 for long road trips and for that I believe the M5 is better than the M3/4 as I believe it is quieter, has more passenger and luggage space, is quicker for passing on 2-lane roads and is generally more comfortable for longer drives. For all of these reasons, I concluded that keeping my M5 is the best option for me. |

So the Mrs. got a G82 Comp. back in December, 2wd, optioned out except CCB. Great car and way more refined than my previous F80. I love driving it (when she lets me) and contemplated for a few minutes getting rid of the F90 for a G80 Comp Xdrive. The easy way out was that I’d basically have two of the same cars in the garage, just one with 2 doors and RWD and the other not. Small things like soft close doors, the massaging seats and a wider interior although not game changers in their own right, are nice to have which the F90 has over the G8x. In the garage, the size difference is not so great between the two believe it or not. The F90 looks like it edges out the coupe by a few inches length wise and from the rear, they’re damn near identical. The G82 moves damn well, turn in is great, and the overall ride is very smooth when in comfort. My F90 is tuned, DP’s, lowered, forged wheels etc. so a performance comparison is not fair in a straight line, by far, but I will say the G82 is more nimble in the curves obviously and doesn’t feel as heavy. I think we could’ve all assumed that part. All this being said knowing what I know, I wouldn’t get rid of the F90 for a G80/82. Honestly, and I say this loving the G8x platform, it would be a bit of a downgrade. I hear throwing the Dinan monoballs on really improves the front end feel and turn in on the F90 and that’s something I’ll be doing along with JRZ coil overs soon, which may bring the feel closer to a G8x platform. Even without, the F90 offers a bit more utility in its interior size, is more powerful stock for stock, and has more refinement and creature comforts that the smaller platform doesn’t offer. In the end, I’m grateful I have both in the stable and it’ll be staying that way for a bit.

F10 M5 compare to F80 M3 is about 12" longer and 800 Lb heavier but F90 M5 compare to G80 M3 is 7" longer and less than 500 Lb heavier beside lots of luxurious / power / torque. However we can't hide that M3 is faster than M5 on track but we dont drive our M cars on racetrack daily basis

It is remarkable, though, to read here that the F90 really isn't that much bigger when you get down to actual measurements. It's certainly not that much heavier. And since I don't need to flex my ego on a track every weekend, the choice is clear!

I am switching to an M5 since my TH got wrecked recently. The M5 and maybe the Plaid, is all I considered. |

I just did it a few months ago, and the M4 just got back the driving excitement to me. The M5 never had that driving excitement to me, very fast and capable though but never felt satisfied after pushing it hard. A bit like wearing a condom
Apart for a perfectly straight line, my M4 is faster in any other driving environments, reaching speeds above what I was seeing in M5

I have an F82, not a G82, and an F90. The F90 makes for a wonderful family car that can is seriously capable. It out brakes, accelerates harder, better highway mpgs and carries more. The F82 is more fun to drive and to push. As far as power in low RPMs the only replacement for displacement is electric, not boost.
